Re: A big "Welcome to Edinburgh" on the Prom; Ad boards

I skated back and forth all summer and found the surface to be a delight. Couple of sections that are a little rough and the cobbley bits take a second's concentration but otherwise it's pretty smooth. It lacks colour and visual interest but there's a decent view to make up for it.

Re: A big "Welcome to Edinburgh" on the Prom; Ad boards

That'll get the blood up. I suspect that's the point though. Bath Street to Joppa is an almost uninterrupted line of beautiful Victorian buildings. I suspect this chap hasn't been to porty recently.

Re: Prom Graffiti: "TWARDOGÓRA ŁÓDŹ BIAŁYSTOK"

The paint roller and location were the Evening News's idea. I think the graffiti piece is excellent and I've nothing against paint rollers either but the photo makes if look like I'm going to roller over someone else's work. That was a big, ugly, empty wall and now it has a meaning and it looks great.

I think you and the rest of the Icebreaker crew have good reason to be watching out for big ships Seanie. When my wife does it it's just nerdy.

There's a similar thing for shipping. You can identify the big boats out on the Forth. Bit nerdy?

Re: A big "Welcome to Edinburgh" on the Prom; Ad boards

I thought about writing it obliquely like they do on rugby and football pitches. I think it's quite nice to put the message out there and accept that some people will see it but most won't. Makes those that do feel all the more special. I know I'd be looking out for it every time I flew over. Maybe ...

Re: A big "Welcome to Edinburgh" on the Prom; Ad boards

That just made me smile. Thanks Max.

I'd like to put a 9'9" tall dropped 99 on the band stand as a permanent sculpture. Life like but oversized. A testament to Portobellos seaside history. Just like the drawing on the Facebook page with a Flake stuck in it. Kids could sit on the flake.

Re: A big "Welcome to Edinburgh" on the Prom; Ad boards

This I an excellent bit of research. At this kind of height the text wouldn't be legible but any lower and we'd be ace. We wouldnt catch every tourist but if one or two saw it it mights work. I say down with test letters and empircal thinking, let's just do it.

Re: A big "Welcome to Edinburgh" on the Prom; Ad boards

I've been looking in to beach huts recently. I've had a ballpark quote from the company that builds the German village on the mound at Christmas time. It's pretty reasonable and could actually make a fairly decent income once the initial outlay is covered. The ground has enough slope that with a lit...

I forgot to say earlier that those approach altitudes came from an aviation enthusiast rather than a bona fide pilot or air traffic controller. If anyone can confirm or deny that would be very helpful.

Re: A big "Welcome to Edinburgh" on the Prom; Ad boards

I have to admit I feel the same way about billboards and aggressive advertising. I think this proposal differs quite a lot from the ugly, illuminated shrine to consumerism I'm sat in front of just now; A soldier with a gun selling the latest Call of Duty game. In the case of Straiton Park I'm sugges...

Re: A big "Welcome to Edinburgh" on the Prom; Ad boards

I've been told 750-1000m which is what I based my mock ups on. It's just visible at 1000m and very clear at 750m. Welcome to Edinburgh was chosen as much for it's social and potential economic benefits as for the strong and easily legible letter shapes. If you offer endless choices it will require e...

Re: A big "Welcome to Edinburgh" on the Prom; Ad boards

I like a little mystery but I still think there's a lot of value in Edinburgh's Seaside. I think the strength lies in forming a link in tourists minds between the beach and the city of Edinburgh. When they get here we can blow them away with all the Portobello we like. I think not shouting "Portobel...

Great news Makaveli,

Keep your eyes peeled for our proposed site. It might be that there's a better point on the prom so eyes peeled, open mind and fingers crossed for a favourable wind.

I really enjoyed typing that last line.

Don't they fly over Porty and out to the Forth before doing a big curve and coming back? I'm sure that's how it looked to me last time but I've not come in that way for a while. So that if the passengers on the left looked out their windows it'd be the right way up for them. Also, this way round kin...

Re: A big "Welcome to Edinburgh" on the Prom; Ad boards

I think the idea was born out a frustration at Edinburgh Council's apparent ambivalence towards Portobello as a tourist destination. The lack of any sign, in the city, pointing to the beach. Tourist Information send people down the coast to Gullane and Yellowcraigs completely bypassing Portobello be...

Re: The shops thread (was: Empty Shops on Porty High St)

I agree. I work away from home far too often. I'd love a shop in Porty. I think it'd be a great way to earn a living and opportunity to be part of and contribute to an excellent community. The rates and rental cost on the shops I've looked at make the idea quite difficult to take any further.

I didn't do a good job with that last post. Not sure about the URL tags at the end. Wanted to add that I only just spotted a piano shop along in Joppa where the tile (I think) shop used to be. This seems like an excellent business for Porty High Street. Even along in Joppa it's still going to feed c...

I’ve been away most of the summer so I didn’t know about any of this. It’s taken an evening to read through all the posts from start to finish. The Big Beach Busk

The Busk is back next weekend, Saturday the 27th of August. It's another mile of Buskers. An open mic, al fresco, free for all and everyone's invited. Musicians, mimes breakers or ballet dancers can get in on the act just by turning up and putting on a show. Every kind of street performance is welco...
