Re: Brighton Place road repairs
I'd asked Maureen Child about this last week as I've been caught by tank trap sized trenches a few times recently - the news is sadly not very promising, she said "I need to chase this up, but no major capital work is happening this financial year." Shame.

Re: Visit Portobello (and let your dog shit everywhere)
For me there is a real problem, but it's not on the beach, it's on our streets and I doubt it's only in Porty. I push a buggy or walk with two toddlers and our pavements are a faecal minefield. The ratio of turds to dogs suggests it is a small minority of owners that are responsible, but that doesn'...

Re: New Portobello High School - PPAG win legal appeal
She wrote on behalf of Portobello Community Council? That seems a bit odd, doesn't it? Just saw Andy Wightman's tweet and this and 'odd' was not the first word I thought of; the CC is supposedly neutral (ha!) on the school/park issue, this is either misrepresentation of or by the CC . The odd bit i...

Re: Baileyfield Site
With regards to building a new school on Baileyfield, contamination of the site is more an issue of time than of heath. I'm sure the site could be cleaned up to remove any health risk, but nobody knows what's there and until they do they can't say how long it will take to clean up nor how much it wi...

Re: Woodwares closing / Sainsburys coming to Portobello
admin : Earlier this evening I was hand delivered a request to remove a post earlier in this thread since it was "a blatant lie". If only the same rigorous devotion to seeking out and exorcising blatant lies and untruths on the internet could be applied on the PPAG website. I'd suggest that, rather...

Re: Woodwares closing / Sainsburys coming to Portobello
Scotmid, as part of the C0-OP, have 7% market share of the UK Food market versus 16% for Sainsbury's. As I understand it Scotmid are not part of 'The Cooperative', but a wholly separate entity. They buy from the wholesale arm of the Cooperative group, so may gain them some advantages in terms of ha...

Re: Woodwares closing / Sainsburys coming to Portobello
Here we go again, PAVED to the fore. You're right in that we shouldn't automatically assume that Sainburys' arrival is bad thing, but in a similar vein we shouldn't just assume that it's either a positive thing or indeed a fait accompli. I'm keen to hear the views of others, maybe see the issue fro...

Re: Woodwares closing / Sainsburys coming to Portobello
What I am surprised that no one has picked up on is that Sainsbury's are claiming they will create up to 25 jobs. Whilst I know most of them will be part-time and none will be well paid, that is probably as many jobs as all the convenience stores put together. Look on the bright side folks, it's mu...

Re: Woodwares closing / Sainsburys coming to Portobello
I'm a big fan of Woodwares, a regular customer and truly sorry to see it go. As for Sainsburys coming, I'd rather it was another independent shop but at least it's a local shop on the High Street rather than another supermarket in an edge of town car park. As there's no car parking (I hope), it shou...

Re: Cycling on the Promenade
Google maps in the UK has now been updated with 'cycle trails', 'dedicated lanes'* and 'friendly roads'. You can view this from the wee menu box on the top right of a map or you can select cycling as an option when asking for directions. The coverage around porty is OK, but patchy, and I'd question ...

Re: Community representation
The CC does not have wards and while it would be best to have people from as wide a range of backgrounds as possible serve on the council it's not likely to happen. A community council will always attract more members from the chattering classes, and while not ideal it does have some benefits. These...

Porty Spring?
I've read a lot of posts on here that would suggest our* Community Council is perhaps not representing the views of the community as well as it might. Some of this may well be a case of PCC not representing the views of the TalkPorty community, which is not a problem, but there are definite instance...

Lost Camera
My wife lost our (my!) digital camera somewhere in the town yesterday, probably on the High street or Brighton Place. It's a blue/silver waterproof Canon D10. If anyone hears of one being found, please let me know.
Thanks,
Charlie.
