The archive

Post by Bob Jefferson » 05 Nov 2005, 11:27

I'm sure I don't have to tell you that the archive is available at:

http://archive.scotsman.com

You can view a sample issue (the very first edition) from this page. My suggestion would be to have a play around with this and work out for yourself what is going to be the best way to copy and file the information. Unfortunately it's not as easy as just copying and pasting text. The pages are images and articles are broken down into several small images. If you 'view as text' it attempts to read the page but not with any great deal of success.

I will arrange a meeting in a week or so and we can then compare experiences and work out the best way to proceed. A year's access costs around £160. I'm hoping that the Community Council, the History Society and PAS will all chip in.

It's going to have to be a very disciplined and structured approach and we will have to think long and hard of how best to file the information in a logical and easily retrievable fashion, so get your thinking caps on.

I'm sure we will uncover lots of interesting facts that have been lost over time but it will be a fair slog. Think of it as community service for all the bad things you have done.

I'm thinking more of a tutorial/training course than a meeting  :?

Why has this forum been disappearing and then reappearing throughout today?
Anyone else notice? :?

I see they have special rates for institutions [and, god knows, this forum resembles one for the mad on occasion  ] so perhaps we'd be able to persuade them that this sort of community project should qualify for special rates/conditions?

Yes, I noticed that too. I'm not sure that they would class us as an institution, but we could try our luck touting it as a Community Council project, or a Portobello History Society project.

I certainly think they should offer us favourable rates for what is a community project, but whether they will see it that way or not is another matter.

I'll give them a ring and sound them out though.

I need to give myself a deadline so let's try to arrange a meeting for sometime next week. I will get in touch with Maggie Le May and find out what the availability is at the Community Centre for an evening towards the end of next week or early the following week and report back, and phone the Scotsman as above in the interim.

Foxy - sorry, my time has been occupied with other matters.

Right, let's do it. Could everyone please post here with their availability for an evening meeting next week? I'll sort a venue once we have a date.

I think I can do any night except Monday.

Make that can't do Monday night or Friday night (POL Xmas night out as I've just been reminded)

So, how is your availability for Tues, Wed or Thurs next week?

I can actually do Tuesday next week as the shorthand course has been cancelled for a week (we have to stand a double dose the week after - Tuesday AND Wednesday nights :( ) or Wednesday.

So both Tuesday and Wednesday seem to be OK for everyone so far. We still need responses from Porty and whoever else was foolish enough to volunteer for this gig.

Plus we need everyone on the cake stand on Saturday morning as Epykat is about to announce, once she and Marya have drunk all the wine they can find.

Just be there, Saturday 10:30 am. And put some lippy on. You want to look your best on telly.

Porty, thanks for this generous offer. Is 7:30 pm ok? And I think it might help to be sober to get our head round this, so maybe coffee would be best. We could always retire to the pub afterwards of course.

Well, we couldn't have timed that much better What a remarkable coincidence! That gives us a week to try out a few ideas before we commit ourselves.

I don't see anything about this on the website, but I expect they will announce it on Monday. Well spotted Pops. :D

As you will have gathered from the late response, I've also been otherwise engaged.

It might be a bit difficult for me to join you as Mrs. R. usually has the private jet during the week, but I will be there in spirit.

If there is any allocation of topics going on, I baggsy the Marine Gardens, The Pierrots and Andrea Letta's theatre where the George now stands.
I have nothing to say and I'm going to say it.
