I've got shorthand and I;ve not really got to grips with the searching.

I wouldn't say no to a rain check. I will probably go see Ali.

Yep. Can we fit in another meeting before the end of the year though? Those of you who have saved 'clippings' should be aware that you wll no longer be able to open these articles after 5pm today. Unless you plan to take out a personal subscription you may wish to copy and paste or at the very least take a note of the dates in question and the search term you used.
Your clippings remain on the Scotsman server however, and if you were to take out a subscription a year from now they should still be accessible to you.
I think we could still have an online meeting of sorts and we could each post our experiences of using the archive, methods used etc. and take it from there.

I found using the archive very straightforward, though I stopped using the clipping facility fairly quickly.
I was finding that most of what I really needed was surrounded by a lot of superfluous material (i.e. I don't need all the information about the pierrots at Stonehaven, Troon and other seaside resorts, when all I wanted was the paragraph about Portobello), and the clippings system took the lot.
So I extracted the image and transcribed the bits that I wanted onto a document I'd created on my desktop. That way I was able to extract just what I wanted, and to place it into a chronological order in a document which can now be sent to other people or posted on the website.
I appreciate that this is a bit labour intensive, but I took the view that I either had to do it as I went along, or do it later, and I know what I'm like about doing things later.
As I mentioned on the other thread, I found it very easy to get sidetracked, so my next Rathbone's Ramblin' post will be about the 1908 proposals for Portobello International Airport.

Did you notice that there is a text button (top right) which gives you a text document transcript of the clipping you're viewing?
Unfortunately, it must be read by a character recognition program because on some of the older clippings the text had a fair proportion of gobbledegook - even losing whole lines when there was a crease in the original. It might be more useful on later editions where the printed text is clearer. Could be useeful for copying and pasting in to a word doc but I didn't get round to trying it.
