I am also another new recruit through Friends Reunited.
I lived in the area until moving to Manchester 3 years ago. I went to Royal High Primary from 77 - 83 and then Porty High from 83 - 88.
Have already seen a few familar names cropping up!!
I should add that Bill's (award-winning) site is well worth a visit and one of the best examples I've ever seen of a community website.Hi
My name is Bill Fernie and I used to live and was brought up in Portobello. I just found your site following an ad type email sent to me at Friends Reunited by Joanna Smith.
What a great surprise to see it all. And it was a bit like looking at a mirror as I run with my son the Caithness Community Web Site www.caithness.org we started just over 5 years ago.
I attended Portobello High School and left in 1964. Won't bore you with all my details as it is all online if you are interested: www.caithness.org/team/billfernie/moreaboutbill.htm
We started off like you with volunteers doing some of the work which was much less at the start and it kept growing. After the first year we ran out of volunteers as some moved away or got jobs. Basically I considered two ooptions - forming a charity and applying for grant funding or becoming a small business. I chose the latter and set up Scorrie Internet Services www.scorrie.co.uk (Scorrie is the local Caithness word for Seagull)
I was fascinated at how similar our sites are in their content and general approach despite the fact I have never seen your site until this morning. We even have the same forum set up - one of the best formats around in our opinion. It makes me wonder if my days in Portobello have moulded me and subsequently my son more than I had reaslised. My formative teenage years were of course at Portobello High School, playing badminton at St Phillips church where I also attended the Youth Fellowship on sundays. I was a member of the scouts at St Marks church. I left school at 15 and went on to successfully sit exams at night school and day release.
I visited Portobello only rarely in recent years as my mother and father died some years ago. We used to live at Magdalene Drive. I went to Lismore Primary school and my sisters went to Brunstane Primary as it opened after I had left primary school. I have three sisters all of whom attended Portobello High - Kathleen Brydon (nee Fernie) who still lives in Edinbugh and is a nurse. Valerie Sneddon (nee Fernie) who now lives with her family in Carluke and works with children with learning disabilities, Avril Duncan (nee Fernie) who now lives in Stornoway and is a music teacher. I will let them all know about the site - we are all in touch by the glorious email as well as by phone.
I have added a links to my own page and in our links section under Edinburgh back to your web site. Thanks a lot for letting me know about it. I will look in from time to time to see how my old home town is getting on and reflect on how much I enjoyed my days there.
