Pain in the butt!

Post by ecm » 07 Mar 2005, 14:13

I'm just back from the doctors.

I have sciatica and it's very painful.

I'm signed off for the next two weeks and as I've been advised to keep on the move you may see me hirpling around Porty looking very sorry for myself.

Doc says it could be a while before I'm totally recovered from this. Anyone else suffered this or got any tips, advice, sympathy etc.?

Trips to the gym are obviously off so I guess it's going to be lots of daytime TV and over-eating for me.

Perhaps the Body Pump will have to be replaced with something more gentle in future.

A man in my office has sciatica, or "a collapsed buttock" as he referred to it.
I think he just grins and bears it.

Bares his buttock? Oh no, sorry, misread that...

Sympathies ecm. I have problems with my lower back from time to time but the only thing that helps it is to keep it moving - swimming the breaststroke is the very best thing for it. Not so sure about sciatica though.

Yes, I 'misread' that too, BB! :D

I've - thank God - never had sciatica myself, but I have heard that the only real relief is to lie in very hot water. A good excuse for a long soak in a nice bath, ecm.

Bellybabe,

I like the idea of a nice, gentle swim. I will see how I go over the next few days and may well give that a try.
Right now I will take Jay's advice and go for a nice hot soak in the bath.

As for Ali's suggestion, I will keep my right hip and leg moving by delivering a swift kick to his badoobies as soon as he gets home tonight.

Poor you ecm, last time I had sciatica was when I was pregnant and painkillers were off the menu

I'd say, send Ali to the offy to buy as much "painkiller" as he can carry

If he's not too grumpy that is
Hopefully it will clear up in a day ot two...take it easy...but walk a lot :walk:

I've had this a long time ago and swimming along with gentle walks really made a difference. For those who can afford it, the Alexander technique works very well for any back / neck complaint. pricey though :(

Take it easy, get better soon ... and don't clean - I've heard this is the worst thing for sciatica

Thanks for the various tips folks.

I am armed to the teeth with painkillers etc. I will do some walking, bathing, I'll avoid the housework and Mimpty, I'll keep my buttocks well covered!

Poppy - you'd better hide under those brewery registrations. Ali's on the warpath!

You have my sympathies, ecm, as one who's had more than my fair share of sciatica. Had an operation for a herniated disc about 13 years ago and although it's better now than it was pre-op I still get bothered with it now and again.

I used to find that when the pain was too bad the only relief I got was lying face-down on the floor propped up on my elbows - something to do with easing the pressure on the nerve. Think everyone might be different on what helps, but might be worth a try.

Lizzie,

I may well try the hot tub/jacuzzi thing up at the Fountain Spa and see if that soothes things.

And Bearcub, before poppy gets a jibe in, I can do face down on the floor no problem!!!

Herniated disc sounds very bad. The GP told me I had to watch for certain things happening that might indicate more serious problems. Sciatica is bad enough for now.

The joys of crap cable TV!

Tomorrow will be a giddy round of Judge Judy, Sally Jessy Raphael and Trisha  Just joking!

Will toddle off soon though.

Hope tomorrows weather is similar to today. I plan a hirple around Porty with my Mum. She uses two sticks to get about so I'll see if she fancies sharing them with me.

Ouch ecm! Sounds sore :(
Homer had a bit of the same problem. A physio suggested a technique that went something like this;

lie on your tummy and get someone (Ali? Brad Pitt?) to place their hands -palms down and facing across your spine in opposite directions- flat on your lower back

gently apply pressure and separate hands, pushing palms in opposite directions i.e the uppermost hand pushes towards the top of your spine and the lower hand gently pushes towards your bum

Hmmm...that's probably not clear at all :? Sorry

No, no Marya, that's very clear. I'll see if Ali will oblige.

I had a few sessions with a marvellous osteopath a few years ago for a frozen shoulder. This guy insisted the problem I had actually stemmed from my lower back and did many manoevres on me, including something similar to that you recommend.
I may go back and see him.

Did quite a bit of walking today and it was fine at the time but I'm sore now. Keeping on the move definitely seems to ease things though.

Managing to resist the daytime drivel for the moment.

ecm, I'm suffering from sciatica at the moment too, indirectly that is. A work mate is off with it just now and I have been doing extra hours to cover for her. I'm not used to working a full day and I'm shattered !
Seriously though, I hope you feel better soon. :D

Osteopath followed by Alexander technique worked for me a few years back. And I gew an inch in height with better posture. One of my best investments in "alternatives"!

Feeling a slight improvement this last couple of days. Still haven't ruled out the osteopath.

I've heard of the Alexander technique - not sure I need any more height though.

Trying not to get too used to being a lady of leisure, Sandra. I might get to like it too much.
I'm listening to lots of music and doing a bit of a Spring de-clutter round the place.

I do have coffee break around the time Judge Judy's on though.
