Marathon today!

Post by Guest » 13 Jun 2004, 09:17

The Edinburgh Marathon takes place this morning. The route will take the runners along Brighton Place, right into the High Street, left into James Street and then along the Prom towards Seafield. The Prom is a great vantage point and the race should pass this point around 11am.

If anyone gets some decent photos of the event please email them to me ASAP and we will get them up on the site.

Bob,
This year is the reverse of last years route.

This year they are running from Silverknowes right along the shore (more or less) and coming along the Prom from Seafield to Joppa Road along Abercorn Terrace to the High Street and then up into Brighton Place.
According to the route map Portobello is around about mile 22.

Not sure what time they'll be getting here.

I pinched it from a user on another forum I visit.

It was a toss up between that one and a very camp solo effort from Spiderman!

Thanks to Bob for loading it for me.

This year is the reverse of last years route.
So it is - silly me! I checked the route but wrongly assumed they were running in the same direction as last time.

We saw the first runner through on the Prom just after 11am. He was wearing no. 1 so I guess he was expected to do well. I was tired just clapping! Good to see lots of local people out cheering them on ond I must confess to a little schadenfreude as I contemplated the long queue of motorists trying to get along the High Street.

More photographs, courtesy of Ali. In the first pic Ali has been fortunate to capture two competitors in the Alf Tupper memorial race.

Marathon

Yes, it was great to see so many more spectators on the Prom this year.
Right beside me was a small boy in a pushchair who was banging a drum. It sounded really appropriate and I wondered whether some of our local musicians would be willing to provide some entertainment next year? If it can happen for the London Marathon, it could happen in Portobello!
