Make Profanity History?

Post by Porty » 08 Jul 2005, 13:57

Well I finally got my hands on the POL profanity list. Sadly I had to circumvent the Moderators to get it. Even more disappointing is the announcement that they will not be entering into a discussion on the subject, which begs belief and has surprised me. I cannot see how that position is tenable?

Some of you have requested that I forward you a copy of the list and of course you are entitled to see it. This also surprised me as i thought I was the only one that cared about it.

I will take the discussion "off-board" for the time being. There is little point in a public discussion when the powers at be will not take part. I am still deciding what I will do. May I ask you wait for the list meanwhile?

The headlines are; there are 39 "words" altogether, although one or two are actually web addresses and there are some duplicates. The list is baffling; it contains some words that Priests or Ministers would use in everyday speech. There is no system whatsoever; it’s a random list. like someone has been amusing themselves with the filter.

For example I could call Pal of Porty or Lawrence Marshall a liar, scumbag, paedophile, tramp, asexual, thief, rapist, frigid etc but I couldn't call him a four-letter word that begins with a P and ends in Roland Rat’s surname.

The profanity filter is a dumb device, it is quite easy to say c.rap by using cleverly placed little dots!

F.reedom o.f S.peech!

Another forum I am a member on died because of over zealous and unnecessary moderation, "to stop people being offended", now no one uses it!

According to a private message (or was it a public one) I received from one of the moderators, if you deliberately avoid the filters by putting dots in etc. etc. you will be b.a.n.n.e.d.

I'm very happy with the Mods on POL and once the profanity filter issue is sorted things will be fine and dandy.
