In case of emergency (ICE) campaign

Post by ceejam » 12 Jul 2005, 11:52

Following the events in London last week;
East Anglian Ambulance Service have launched a national "In case of
Emergency (ICE)" campaign with the support of Falklands war hero Simon
Weston and in association with Vodafone's annual life savers award.
The idea is that you store the word "ICE" in your mobile phone address
book, and against it enter the number of the person you would want to be
contacted "In Case of Emergency". In an emergency situation ambulance
and hospital staff will then be able to quickly find out who your next
of kin are and be able to contact them.
It's so simple - everyone can do it. Please do. Please will you also
forward this to everybody in your address book, it won't take too many
forwards' before everybody will know about this. It really could save
your life.
I think this is quite clever and dead easy to do!

So do I and will do it.
Can't help thinking that Vanilla is going to get fed up fielding calls when his mates get in trouble. :D

Not sure how contacting my next of kin would save my life - he fixes alarms not people
Enough of your nonsense - get back to the Play Pen!

Oh my life. I know you mean well but this hysteria is becoming hysterical.

What a tactless double whammy - especially given the terrifying pictures of that poor woman in the burns mask - are we now supposed to think that it wasn't Thatcher's jackboot on the Malvinas but in fact the failure of Mr Weston to program his phone correctly that led to his injuries?

Are the guys who went down in the Belgrano heroes too? Who is going to sponsor them - Farmfoods?? O2??

I'm all for the substance of the campaign. But corporations and soldiers are the entities who (arguably) got us into this whole mess in the firstplace, and the timing of the campaign means that everyone is reminded of the bombing tragedy every time they look through their address book.
dead easy
unintentional, i'm sure

Just been sent a warning that this may be
phase one of a scam, the second phase of which is a virus sent as part of a ring-tone download which goes into your address book and looks for ICE. It then sends the virus on to all those listed under ICE.

Warning: ICE is a phone based virus
It sounds like if you download ringtones there will be a problem.

Be very careful with this one - although the intention is great it is unfortunately phase one of a phone based virus that is laying a path for propagating very quickly. Passing it on is part of the virus
Interestingly, such is the deviousness of the people who write these things. We have already seen the 'second phase' where a program is sent as part of a ring-tone download that goes into your address book and looks for something it recognises - you've guessed it, an address book entry marked "ICE or I.C.E." or similar. It then sends itself to the "ICE list", charging you for the privilege.

Just received -

From http://www.eastanglianambulance.com/con ... 1121256619
ICE not a hoax

Email hoaxers are threatening a campaign to encourage people to store contact details in their mobile phones.

The ICE (In Case of Emergency) scheme gained widespread coverage in the wake of Thursday's London bombings as word spread by email throughout the world.

People can add into the mobile's address book ICE and the name and number of the person they would like contacted in an emergency.

But a subsequent email circulated by malicious hoaxers suggests that ICE is a type of mobile phone virus which accesses your address book and drains pay-as-you-go phones of its credits.

Matt Ware, spokesman for the East Anglian Ambulance Service, asked people to ignore the hoax email.

"I have been inundated with emails and phone calls from people worried that, having put ICE into their mobiles, they are now going to be charged for the privilege," he added.

"We would like to assure people that that's not the case. Whoever began this second email chain is obviously a malicious person with way too much time on their hands."

Details of ICE can be found at www.icecontact.com

Here's another TLA (3 letter acronym) folks:

FUD

Fear,
Uncertainty &
Doubt.

Imagine if the scenario of such a phone based virus was real - it would forward itself on to all entries in your phonebook!

Anyone who is on Lawrence Marshall's mailing list, will, as of now, know
that ICE is not a scam, I don't know if it is or isn't - however, the following is a reply to Lawrence from a citizen (not me) of Portobello!

Response to Lawrence

Lawrence ICE may not be a hoax but it certainly adds to the moral panic.Because you have been such a good shepherd I ,and all my friends are putting you down as next of kin. I am reminded of the song I used to sing as a child at the railway mission during the war;

We're going to the Mansions on the Happy Day Express
The letters on the engine are JESUS
The guard * asks" Are you ready?"
And we gladly answer "Yes"
For we're going to the Mansions on the Happy Day Express.

* I would like to think that you would be that guard.hallelujah!

Best wishes for the future , if we have one.
