C4 - Ghost Squad

C4 are currently showing the only series of undercover police drama "Ghost Squad" again, in a fitting slot (late at night on Tuesdays) for this mournful, overlooked gem :

Even the Channel 4 website shows disdain for this offering - they did a writeup for the first episode and never went back to do the others!

In the first episode of "Ghost Squad", the lead character (Elaine Cassidy) hasn't joined the team yet - but viewing figures fell from the initial number that watched, and never recovered as the series progressed.

Somewhere along the way, they never got to make a second series so, not for the first time in tv, we're left with just a handful of episodes and plenty of unfinished business.

It's entirely fitting - even if unfair - that this show got the axe. The mournful 4 note sequence of the theme tune, the increasingly bitter, cynical and manipulated characters who become more attuned to the realities of their jobs as time goes on - all of these things embody a personality which would be unsurprised at the insignificance of the passing of something with merit.

I saw a couple of episodes when it was on the first time. Thought it was excellent, and considering the 2 leads must be about 16 years old, they make very good coppers.

JP.

PS. Love that avatar!

They were nippers weren't they! I guess it's obligatory these days to have some pretty people to look at - but there's a defense in this case as the people they work for are older and corrupt - with part of the ongoing plot that the youngsters are going to have to learn how the system works etc
