108

Post by Porty » 12 Jan 2009, 01:01

I think its my fave Chinese takeaway in Porty and for many years its been run by a lovely family of Chinese origin. The Chinese are reknowned for their prophecy's and for taking the longer term view. However, when, all those years ago, they came up with what seemed like a good name for their establishment it must have felt safe to assume that hibs would not have to wait 108 years to win the Scottish cup. Sadly they will now have to spend a small fortune to rebrand and bring things up to date. Its been a painful learning curve and something I'm sure they will not wish to go through again. I'm thinking it should become the 175 but I am probably being too optimistic.

I think you are being a tad optimistic - the '208' would be a much more realistic option and not too dramatic a shift from their current brand name. This would also mean they could have another century without changing their headed paper. 8)

Good thinking- they only have to change one number.

Fab 208- Radio Luxembourg
sorry going into a nostalgia trip here
Around the time I was listening to 208 was the time my dad took me to my 1st ever football match

Tynecastle New Years Day 1973
Hibs 7 Hearts 0

Ah days gone by...

I was there too and I carried the scars for years, irrespective of what Hearts did in future matches versus Hibs. My time on the Psychiatrist's couch was finally over however after witnessing the 4-0 humiliation in the recent cup semi-final - a 1973 ghost was laid to rest and I am now out of therapy. 8)

Was listening to 208 when they announced that Elvis had died. Think it may have been Tony Prince.

Snap! So was I! You've got a better memory than me though, I haven't a clue who the DJ was.

As a long suffering season ticket holder at Easter road, I'm not going to bite, suffice to say I'd rather see my sister in a brothel than my brother in a hearts strip.

On the chinese side, check out the tiger in along near the cash and carry, I've used the 108 for many years but recently I've been going to the tiger in

I'm not gonna bite either. But on the chinese front, Portobello lacks a good chinese takeaway.

The 108 used to be my favourite Chinese takeaway in Portobello but I got fed up with it and with takeaway Chinese food in general. I still think that Chinese is one the great cuisines of the world - but good examples of the genre are hard to find. It has been dumbed down, westernised, bastardised and covered in sickly day-glo gloopy sauce.

I was in the Nite Club when the DJ broke the news about Presley. Lots of people cheered and then he played 'Bodies' from a pre-release copy of Never Mind the Bollocks.

As an impartial observer, I thought the red card was a bit harsh and spoiled the game to some extent.

I'd forgotten all about this takeaway (we've used the Dragon Way of late) - but glad you reminded me!! I'm going to get a few menus and leave them on the desks of a few choice people from work !

I was there on sunday morning btw - happy days :P

From where I was sitting, we had a good view of the sending off, it looked a stonewall decision. However, not quite so convincing when watched on TV. I don't agree that it spoiled the game, it was pretty poor. Great result tho and made up for last weeks draw- hearts were robbed. I do agree about Chinese takeaway - I've never tried cooking chinese food.- back to the football. Hearts fans gave the hibs a hard time for not selling all their tickets. It can't be too much of an attraction turning up for over a century and having nothing to show for it!

Hmm we may have been sitting close to each other as I had a good view also ! I was close to the front in the left hand corner of the stand J 138 in fact!
Yes was there the week before and agree we were robbed - bar & post were hit 3 times in a game we dominated. I did like the "there's only one eddie murphy" jibe after the big man had scored!

I seem to recall the prince announced the king was dead! I'm sure there were no newsreaders the DJ just adopted a bit more gravitas and read the news. I was probably listening to a crackly radio, under my bed covers as I needed to secrete the fact I was listening from my Mum and dad- bet you were much the same! Porty C think I was row F seat 113 or 103! Perfect for the GG goal!

Tiger in is my fav.

Only like one dish from 108 - noodles with chicken and chili black bean sauce. Can anyone recommend another from here, that is good?

Where is the Tiger in ?
We use the 108 or the Chi Wai but they are not consistent, sometimes the food is lovely then the next time it's rubbish. I find I'm having chow mein more often as there's no gloopy sauce with that. We used to like the Seaview so were rather disappointed when it closed.

I wasn't taking issue with myself - I was merely correcting the information that I had given!
