I must confess that it was not me who posted that message, but my son. I was making a cup of tea and had left myself logged on. I have told him that if he tries that again I will make him read 100 years of solitude and then he might actually appreciate Philip Pullman!

mimpty/bellybabe

my main ambition is to go to Austria :)

and I really wanted to go to boarding school too

I belong to another forum that's solely dedicated to the Chalet School (although other EBD books do get a mention). We had a big meet-up earlier this year and it was so good to meet other fans, some of whom are even more manic about it that me

if you want the URL for the forum then PM me and I'll give it to you

Oh, now I feel much better - i was afraid to admit to having been at an Edinburgh FOCS meeting last week (Friends of the Chalet School/ the New Chalet Club). And someone else living in Porty goes to it too! We had Guernsey gache.

Now I have completely destroyed my public persona. I lived with my guilty secret for years.

I have to admit to never having heard of the "Chalet" books.
I'm guessing it's kind of like the "Four Marys" but with mountains.

This has cheered my lunch time right up! :D

I have always wanted to go to Guernsey to spot the places referred to in the books and I can only admit it because this is anonymous!
Can't believe someone else has gone for that reason. Excellent!

The only Four Mary's I know are Mary Queen of Scots and her 3 companions.

There were also books about a girls at school by Angela Brazil - is that the right name? The forum "babes" are bound to know.

I also read a lot of horsey books as a child - Ruby Ferguson and the Pullein Thompson sisters - anyone remember them?

Angela Brazil wrote lots of school stories, i think. I've only read one and i'm told it's not one of the better ones. And I only had one pony book, Jackie Won a Pony, by Christine P-T...it made me cry when i was wee. The only other books to do that were Little Women (Good Wives) and the story of the Little Mermaid...

But Guernsey was great! Someone just posted me a photo of the house meant to be La Rochelle and asked if i'd seen it, and I had... We were staying five minutes' walk from Jerbourg where the school was supposed to be, although there's no building there that could have been it.

It's so nice to finally be able to admit the real reason for the holiday! People kept asking "Why guernsey?" and I kept fudging, mumbling about it being supposed to be pretty and so on... But now I've come out, as it were, about my obsession i can tell the truth lol! Glad we've cheered up your lunch hour!

Here's a link to Brookmyre's website - a very funny [and topical] short story:

http://www.brookmyre.co.uk/bampota.htm

Saw an item on Teletext that Quite Ugly should be on ITV this autumn. Will be interesting to see how they 'do' the item on the mantelpiece at the start of the book.

ITV adaptation of QUOM starring James Nesbitt is on this Sunday (5th) at 9.00pm. Not sure if he will make the perfect Jack Parlabane but will be giving it a look anyway...

I'll definitely give it a go. I really enjoyed the Parlabane books.
I agree with you Bearcub, James Nesbitt seems an odd choice for the role.
I hope it's not as much of a miscast as John Hannah proved to be in the Rebus stories that were adapted for tele a while back. He was about 15 years too young and far too camp for the role.
Someone like Ken Stott should've played Rebus instead of wasting his talents in that Messiah nonsense.
Whodunnit btw I missed last night's episode?

Ken Stott would have been an excellent Rebus

ecm - it was the young doctor. He was mad (obviously) and thought the detective was his sister (real sister in asylum). He killed everyone he thought was upsetting her. (!)

Re Rebus - I had always thought Ken Stott was the perfect Rebus so I'm glad that's finally happening. Hannah was too young and wimpy and hadn't bothered changing to an east coast accent.

Saw a trailer for "Quite Ugly..." Nesbitt hasn't bothered changing his accent either. Is it still set in Edinburgh?

There was an interview on teletext with James Nesbitt about this - he reckons that when he tried to do an Edinburgh accent, he was told he 'sounded gay'!!! He decided this doesn't fit the part.

Mimpty,
I didn't know this - how fab! Do you have any more info on this?

I really don't understand the appeal of John Hannah. I find him completely wooden and very annoying. I'm afraid I would have to slap him if I ever ran into him in Bath Street.
Nothing personal like!

ECM,

I did a wee bit digging around and ... on a Ken Stott web site it says that Val Mc Dermid's website says she was told this by Ian Rankin himself.

KS had ruled it out as he had done so many police shows but then there were reports that he might consider it, and now this. :D

I'm off for a drool, eh, I mean to check it out!

P.S. Mimpty thanks for the Messiah update. I was so caught up in the Ken news I forgot to say ta earlier!

Just to remind folks that the dramatisation of that Christopher Brookmyre novel "Quite Ugly One Morning" is coming on at 9.00pm on ITV.
Filmed in Edinburgh it might be interesting to see which locations we can identify.
The book was an excellent read. I'll reserve judgement on whether James Nesbitt will make a convincing investigative juornalist who's meant to be Scottish!!

Don't think there'll be much chance of spladooshing John Hannah, but I could easily spladoosh the Porty person - I know her very well!! 8)

Have given you a bit of a bum steer on the Stott/ Rebus subject, ecm.

I heard an interview on BBC Scotland with Ian Rankin on Saturday. He said he thought Ken Stott probably felt he had played enough policemen, and Rankin wouldn't say if he would be going to play him. Pest!

I've just realised why she looked so familiar to me. Isn't it one of the dog ladies? (Sorry, I know I'm months late with this...)
