Apologies if this is the wrong board for this or if it's not allowed (please delete if it is).
Today (Friday 24th) I was out of the house all day. At approx 1pm my fiance came home to walk the dog. He was out for about half an hour and when he came back the flat had been broken into. There was no sign of forced entry and the police think the robber used a bit of plastic to jimmy the lock open. They took both our MacBook laptops (one silver and one black) and a small grey and orange trolley style suitcase which had my Nikon D50 digital SLR camera and, most worryingly of all seeing as I'm going on my honeymoon in two weeks, my passport.
The most worrying aspect for me is that the person seemed to be acting on information possibly from someone in the same stair as us as this is the exact time that my fiance comes home to walk the dog on a regular basis (I have been working on and off in Glasgow for the past few months so have been gone all day). It seems as if they knew it was the small window of time when it was pretty much guaranteed no one would be home and neither would the dog (who barks very loudly when anyone rings our doorbell/comes to the door).
Our neighbour downstairs saw a dodgy guy hanging about in the stair just after my fiance left so we think he was already in the stair and waiting for him to go. Neighbours out in the street saw him walking off up the street wheeling my little suitcase along. If anyone saw someone with this suitcase (it is quite distinct: grey with two thick bright orange stripes down the front and shaped like a backpack) please please either let the Porty police know or, if you don't want to talk to them, let me know on this thread or through PM. Same if anyone happens to offer to sell you any of the stolen items. It would be much appreciated!

First of all let me offer my sympathies, it's a horrible feeling to find someone has been through your house.
It may not be someone acting on a tip off
These people hang around looking as if they're visiting or looking for a pal and try doors at random.
They're very "gallus"
A few years ago there was a spate of flat burglaries in Porty, a man and woman were eventually charged.
They did out flat on Xmas Eve in the one hour in that whole week no one was in. Small kick to the right bit of the door
They came back and burgled our downstairs neighbour just after New year by jemmying a window open, left her flat came up to the flat next door and knocked on her dorr.
The lass next door looked through the spyhole to see them putting down the cakes they were eating and pull on gloves. She made a noise and they strolled off
Caught the next day with the woman still wearing downstairs neighbours gold chain!
All you can do is deter these people
Get a mortice lock and use it everytime you leave
a locking door chain like
THIS
may slow them down
window locks
Think how you'd get in if locked out
and keep any spare keys well hidden. If they have to go in and out through the window they're more likely to be noticed
Mark all items you can with a uv pen or some other identification. keep a note of serial nos. In the event that any property is recovered you can then claim it back.
