REALLY Annoying!

Post by Hell's Cat » 16 Oct 2004, 12:16

I am suddenly getting these emails, see below. As far as I am concererned this is harrassment! If you get these DO NOT respond to it. Delete it immediately it's a hoax I have removed the address and website from the email in case anyone is tempted. Is anyone else being plagued by these? To be absolutely clear the excerpt below is unsolicited mail I have received do not respond to it.

"From the desk of

Bill and exchange manager
BANK OF AFRICA(BOA)
xxxxx.
xxxxxxxx,
xxxxxxx

Dear Friend,

I am the manager, incharge of bill and exchange of the Bank Of Africa
(BOA)
foreign remittance department. There is a business l would want you to
champion for me.In my department l discovered an abandoned sum of US
$30m
(Thirty million united states dollars)In an account that belongs to
one of
our foreign customer mr xxxxxxxx from Brunei.who died along with
his
entire family in Novmber 1999 in an Aeroplane crash in Abidjan coast in
Cote
D'Ivoire. (for more information about this crash and the person, please
visit
this website: http://www.xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Since we got information about his death,we have been expecting his
next of
kin to come over and claim his money because we can not release it
unless
somebody applies for it as next of kin or relation to the deceased as
indicated in our banking guidelines, but unfortunately we learnt that
all
his supposed next of kin or relation died along side with him in the
plane
crash leaving noone as the right beneficairy to his balance with our
bank.

It is therefore upon this discovery that l decided to make this
business
proposal to you and release the money to you as the next of kin or
relation
to the deceased for safety and subsequent disbursement since nobody is
coming for it and we don’t want this money to go into the bank
treasury as
unclaimed fund.

The request of a foreigner as next of kin in this business is
occasioned by
the fact that the customer was a foreigner and a Burkinabe can not
stand as
next of kin to him.l have agreed, that after the smooth conclusion of
the
transaction, that l will make it 60-40 for you considering you as a
foreign
partner,in respect to the provision of a foreign account,There after l
will
visit your country for disbursement according to the percentage
agreed.

Therefore to enable the immediate transfer of this fund to you account
as
arranged, you will apply first to the bank as relations or next of kin
of
the deceased, indicating your full name, your private telephone and fax
numbers for easy and effective communication and the location where in
the
money will be remitted.Upon the receipt of your reply, l will send to
you
by EMAIL OR FAX the text of the application.

Be you informed that this transaction is hitch free both now and in the
future you should not entertain any fear whatsoever,as all required
arrangements have been perfected for the transfer.Trusting to hear from
you
immediately.

Yours faithfully
AMUDA LORGU
Bill and exchange manager(BOA).

DO NOT RESPOND TO THIS OR ANY EMAIL LIKE THIS. THESE PEOPLE ARE CRIMINALS
Only after the last tree has been cut down, only after the last river has been poisoned, only after the last fish has been caught, only then will you find, that money cannot be eaten.

It's a variant on the Nigerian scam.

You're absolutely right Hell's Cat - Do not respond! A lot of people get these emails from time to time. The consequences of being taken in by the con has been known to drive people to bankruptcy.

Yes, though I mainly get them at work where they get zapped straight away along with a lot of other dodgy things.

Whatever you do, don't reply. Someone at my work did, and inadvertantly let them know the office telephone number and we started getting cold calls as well, trying to sell us shares on the american stockmarket!

another scam

Post by CatzVP » 18 Oct 2004, 04:55

I have been getting spammed from a Russian site claiming to be the Citibank, demanding that I verify my account details, by filling in a form with my account number, PIN, and personal details, or my account will be subject to closure and fines.

I pity anyone who falls for this, I had the same one from a Brazilian source just the other week!

Just glad im not in the Citibank I guess!

Yep had the citibank one and the Lloyds one too. I cannot believe anyone would fall for them even if they did have an account with one of them.

What's really bugging us at the moment is the phone calls from India - not exactly sure what they're trying to sell us coz I'm just incredibly and unashamedly rude and hang up right after the bit where they say "Is that Mrs.......?! :x

I had a phonecall last night from India but he said the line was so bad he would call again. I think it is from my credit card company. They do this every so often wanting me to take out insurance on my balance. I say I don't discuss banking matters ove the phone.

Its probably a UK company using cheaper third world workers to do telesales (even though its long distance).... Dell PC's used to do it for customer service and tech support but had so many complaints that they couldnt understand a word of advice that Dell had to go back to their old system.

Is anyone else getting bombarded with phone calls that are actually recorded messages? They start with the usual 'Congratulations you have been selected at random.....'. Usually with an American accent.

Yes. I am.

And the damn things are on a loop, so if, like me, you have BT's call-minder, it jams it up, and since the message never comes to an end, you can't get past it to delete it, or hear any other messages. I have TWICE had to get BT to remove my call-minder and then re-instate it.

:angry4: :angry4: :angry4: :angry4:

I was given a number to ring to stop this, but I haven't tried it yet. It's 0870 444 3969. There's also one to stop cold calling 0845 07007007

Sorry! Got those number round the wrong way! I just tried 'em!

0845 0700707 is for all sales and marketing calls - but it takes 28 days to come into effect.

0870 444 3969 is for silent calls

However, both worth trying, I think.

Telephone Preference Service

Post by Skeely » 20 Oct 2004, 16:57

I've completely stopped what used to be a regular flood of marketing phone calls at teatime by registering with the Telephone Preference Service. I did the mailing version at the same time, so no more junk mail too!

On the day of my mother's funeral in March I took a call from India for my mother on a bad line. I explained that she was dead, but could tell the chap didn't understand.

So, would you believe, a couple of hours after the funeral the same chap called back. I think that this time he got the message! It was - almost - laughable.
