That's a shame, enjoyed some good lunches in the Old Pier over last year. Their Findlay's steak pies and home-made burgers were good hangover food :D Had seen their advert for Burns night meals for this week this morning, was thinking of paying a visit but won't bother now :(

And, if they're not selling food anymore, will they not have to change their name from 'Old Pier Bistro', a bistro without food doesn't seem right :-k

Been dying to try Sizzlers for a while but impending wedding and January empty pockets have stifled any plans to date. Although if they have a Valentines menu on, we might book a table.

I have to hand it to you Porty, you have a real 'stick that in your pipe and smoke it' attitude! :P

BTW I saw that poor woman standing shivering on your front-doorstep last evening, risking hypothermia in order to have a quiet puff. You cruel host you!

That was my Mum. we let her smoke on the doorstep as a special treat for her birthday. Normally she has to stand outside your house. :P

Another thumbs up for sizzlers, with toddler in tow. We have been there for quick coffee and cake and a couple of meals, and the dad man has finally lost his nervousness about our toddler. (Mainly she just likes to lick the glass at thef ront and watch the world go by.) And we now also take a strapping in device!

The food and service have always been f-a-b and if they would just put up a sign saying they do coffee & cakes I am sure they would get daytime trade too.

This place has had so many good reports now and I still haven't got round to trying it. However, there has been some behind the scene discussion about organising another POL night out and I think that Sizzlers would be a popular choice.

It would be to celebrate our 300th registered member and our 15000th post, which isn't far off.

How about Saturday 5 March? Or suggest your own dates and we'll run a poll.

That's Scotlands first match in this year's Six Nations away to France. I know at least one POL'er who is going over. :)

Sat 5th March sounds good though never having been to Sizzlers yet, those of you who have - how many does it cater for in one sitting? :)
How old would you be, if you didn't know how old you are?

I can probably manage that.

I wont be able to manage that date :sad5: . Having a wee op on the Thursday and already planning to give my Saturday Madam Butterfly ticket to someone else.

However, I had my birthday bash at Sizzlers. There were around 20 of us so we were asked to choose what we wanted to eat a few days before due to the small kitchen and storage space. Apparently the lack of storage space means that everything has to be fresh and not prepared earlier - can't say I'm complaining about that one :D

Bob, it would be worth checking this out if there is a large group of POLers planning to go.

Would love to come if the date is changed to a week or so later :?: :D

Thanks for the tip. The following Saturday is fine by me but may not suit everyone. I'll run a poll.

Maybe not the right thread for this but it's where I brought the subject up.

Update on the Old Pier....................they have got their menu boards out again so they have obviously decided to do food again.

They even have their Burns menus back on  but on principle we are not going to sample it after they left us in the lurch on Monday night. :angry2: :angry3:

Thanks for keeping us updated, TG. My sister was saying last night that she had seen a menu board outside last night. Glad to hear this. :D

Well, I now know why you are raving about Sizzlers! Its fab, a definite thumbs up. We went for dinner tonight, the food is amazing and on our doorstep!

There was a little bit of drama tonight a fellow diner collapsed and an ambulance had to be called - hopefully she will be ok. The chef was worried that it was his food which caused it.

Bearcub had a special (sorry DG) fillet steak with goats cheese gratin with red wine and mushroom sauce. It was very yummy.

The father and son who run it are really genuine nice people.

All in all, great place and a very welcome addition to Portobello. (and we got a sambuca on the house!)

We've booked for Feb 14th! (yes I know we are meant to be saving)

On the subject of the Old Pier, I met the chef in Williamson's yesterday, buying his fish. He says they are going to extend their seafood menu. Seems as though things are looking up round her in a culinary sense.

That's good to hear. I like the chef in the Old Pier - apart from being a good chef he's also a nice guy who genuinely seems pleased when you enjoy his cooking. Chefs are definitely one of those careers where the love of the work makes the product so much better :D

Good to see that places like Sizzlers & Dalriada are showing that there's a market for good restaurant food in Porty.

Beach Babe and myself enjoyed Sizzler's hospitality last night, food and service were impeccable. There was a valentines menu - we had sushi, stuffed duck and chocolate-covered pear.

I can't over-praise the food quality and presentation, nor the service, as both were faultless. We even got a free drink at the end and some valentines chocolates. It was £25 a head.

It was a cosy atmosphere, and as it was the first time we've been there of an evening it was interesting to see the father and son team running the place when it was full. They're obviously very experienced.

When they first came, I was anxious for the place to survive, but I have a feeling now that they will.....

Dadaist we went too - the food was fab. The father and son who run it work very well together and are so nice and friendly. They are busy most nights too which is great and within walking distance.
