POL Fat Club
POL Fat Club
Its that time of Year and I feel imbued with a new vigour to get fitter in 2005. I wll have some support from PoP as he is on a campaign too. To be honest Im not that bothered about losing weight but it would be nice to do so. Does anyone fancy a bit of an on line support in a quest to get fit/slim?
Dont know quite how it would work? We could take a personal pledge to visit the gym or walk or stuff like that. And those of us who are brave enough could state the amount of weight they intend to lose and report progress. Crap idea or what?

I don't think I'll ever be a member of the Porty Fat Club. I'm just one of life's skinny types, but of course that doesn't mean that I'm at all fit. I've been a member of Pulse Direct for 6 months or so and the facilities along at Portobello Swim Centre are excellent value and the staff very friendly.
So forget your poncey health clubs and get along to Porty Pool and support your local facilities. It's worth joining for the Turkish Baths alone. I try to go 3 times a week and usually make 2. It's always nice to see a familiar face so I'm hoping that some of you will take up Porty's suggestion.

To illustrate the value of Pulse Direct, froglette and I have a peak hours joint corporate membership at £54 per month between us. That entitles us to unlimited use of the pool, the well-equipped gym and the Turkish baths. We also have access to a whole range of free classes throughout the week. Seriously, I can't recommend it highly enough.
Great Sandra. I believe we need a critical mass of volunteers maybe 5 or 6. of us.Sandra wrote:Porty
Very good idea. I put on quite a few pounds over Christmas (too much cheese, wine, chocolate, cake etc. etc. I am back at work on Wednesday and diet starts then! I have a gym membership near my work which I use at least twice a week. But the group support thing would be good too.
Personally speaking i intend to practice alchohol limitation for the next month or so and WILL go to Living Well before this week is out. Ive not been for ages.
PD sounds good value Bob but to be honest I prefer spinning to swimming and the gym.
Between May 2003 and July 2004 I lost 3.5 stones - since sitting at a desk for the last four months I've put on eight pounds which I want to shift! I blame it on working at your work quite a bit recently Sandra and being stuff with scones and croissants!Sandra wrote:Porty

I personally think gyms are a waste of money, though I do like going for a swim now and then. I prefer walking and/or cycling (both free and can be fitted in to your daily routine without too much problem)
Is there anyone out there though who would be brave enough to state online how much they weigh
I certainly wouldn't
How old would you be, if you didn't know how old you are?
That sounds like a really good idea Sandra, I usually try this every JanuarySandra wrote:
Me too, plan to reduce alcohol limits to none during the week (which is difficult when you've had a hard day in the office) and only drink at the weekends and try and stick within the recommended units per week
I think I made it through the first week - once
I'll try harder this year

Re: POL Fat Club
I personally a) really miss walking now that I don't have the dog b)would love to start walking again but hate doing it on my own c)would like some company - so why don't some of us get together at a set time every night and go for a walk? Doesn't have to be anywhere exotic. Along the beach, up through the Coillesdenes for a look in everybody's windows and back along. We used to do something like that almost every night with the dog and it kept us a bit fitter than we are at the moment. I'd be up for it if anybody else is interested?Porty wrote: We could take a personal pledge to visit the gym or walk or stuff like that. Crap idea or what?
Enough of your nonsense - get back to the Play Pen!

I would be up for that BobBob Jefferson wrote:I'm up for organising some rambling/hill walking if anyone fancies it. Nothing too strenuous - the Pentlands perhaps? Hill walking boots are fairly essential, especially at this time of year, but you don't need any other fancy gear.

Here's an interesting fact I just learned over the dinner table (I really must speak to my wife more often). Apparently, any two persons can hold a Pulse Direct joint membership. You don't have to prove that you are married, co-habiting or related in any manner whatsoever. So, you can save yourself a few quid by persuading a friend to join with you. One person is responsible for the direct debit but you could share the cost.
I try to go to Porty pool on a regular basis - mainly to the gym. Had been going to body balance for a couple of years. Really enjoyed it but enjoy the gym more now. Find that I can switch off the the day and everything in general while I'm there.
I park my car about half an hour walking distance from work most mornings and have a brief walk to and from work. Great relaxation and wind-down on the way home.
We are off tomorrow for a few days to Loch Lomond tomorrow. Can't wait
So, cutting a long story short (oops, too late!

Good book for walks is '100 Countryside Walks around Edinburgh' by Derek Storey (Mainstrean Publishing - ISBN 1 84018 182 6). £7.99. Includes the Hermitage etc, Pentlands, East Lothian coast, Water of Leith, Canals, etc.
Although don't believe a word about the buses as it's a bit out of date in that regard!
He's also written '100 Hill Walks around Edinburgh' for the more experienced/hardy folk.
