Porty on the web

Post by Tana » 07 Feb 2005, 12:27

Hello,

I just wondered if the some of the wonderful stuff on Portobello Online could go on the Portbello, Scotland entry at:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portobello,_Scotland

I am thinking about the stuff for visitors especially.

I have added a link back to the main site for them just now.

Any thoughts?

Hi Tana,

Interesting link.

One of the external links given at the foot of the entry does actually link to the main On-line page.

I love this bit from the "Story of Portobello" link.

"By 1661 the “Mercurius Caledonius” records the race of twelve baker’s wives from Portobello to the top of Arthur Seat. The “Mercurius” adds “All of them in a condition which makes violent exertion unsuitable to the female form”. The prize was a hundredweight of Cheese (112lbs), along with Dunkeld Whisky and Brunswick Rum. The next day sixteen fishwives ran from Musselburgh to the Canongate Cross."

Classic!

Hi Tana! Thanks on behalf of us all for the compliment. What threads of the Forum do you think would attract a visitor? (I'm not sure our comments about Portobello's hostelries would exactly pull the tourists in!)
Will the external link that you've provided to the main Portobello Online site not just let them link into the Forum site anyway?

Sorry Guys,

By Portobello Online I meant the website not this forum.

As Marya pointed out, the forum is linked from the site anyway.

My link to the site was just a stop-gap measure; I thought that there was merit in expanding the Wiki pages. I will certainly look through the rest of the wiki looking for Porty references and link them back to the article (For example from the piece in Sir Harry.

Sorry, I dont see how this article is relevant.

The Wiki entry is about Portobello and there is an External Links section. I am unclear as to why it can link to the Community website and not the Rugby website (which is a community itself in Portobello). What makes one more relevant than the other, because you think so?

I also am unsure as to why you get to decide if it goes on or not and feel it necessary to remove a link I entered THREE TIMES without even mentioning it, all very underhand.

Are you going to go round the rest of the Wiki and remove links to rugby clubs that in your opinion should not be there?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bath
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Livingston%2C_Scotland
etc. etc.

* Edit, changed TWICE to THREE TIMES

Because it's not a web directory, simple. The community website it links to (this one) itself has a list of links to related sites... And if you look at the article history you'll see it was mentioned why (two of the times).

Lots of places have lots of rules. Some people get to bend some of them, others do not.

Sorry, I dont think your answer is good enough. I am not debating whether its a Web Directory or not.

I am debating why you think it should only link to one place and one place only AND why you sneakilly removed a link to a website that I put in three times without as much as an email, or a PM.

The only reason this is an issue is because I found out what you had done?

You did not answer any of my questions.

Sorry, I disagree, this a Portobello issue and I would like it discussed here. I would like to know other peoples opinions?

You still didn't answer my questions?

Do you think its reasonable of me to go on to the Wiki and delete the entry to the POL website and add the rugby one because I think its more relevant? After all, it does link to POL on its links page so why not? No, I wouldn't do that, because I think that would be selfish and not in the spirit of things.

Ed - you have used the word "I" 18 times so far in this thread!

Wiki is infuriating but charming at the same time. You and Wangi are in a sense both correct, in that both of you have equal editing rights - as do the rest of the planet.

You have pointed out 2 local wiki pages - Livi and Bath - both of whom have links to their local rughby clubs. What differs in terms of the Porty wiki page is that ours needs to be expanded upon as it's only a short-ish paragraph - the Bath and Livi pages both have sports sections.

I would suggest that you help expand the entire Porty wiki page so that it includes a sport section, which will logically include something about the rugby club.

Not quite sure the relevance of that? 6 posts?

Sounds good. No problem. However I do not wish wasted effort, i.e. if anything I do will be deemed inappropriate and removed once again?

It's in the same spirit as my "rules" post - you are free to interpret it as you wish. Others may interpret in their own way, too.

When wangi removed your simple insertion of a URL he did it because he thought he was walking the wiki way. He would have to reason differently if he deemed it necessary to remove an entire well-written section on local sport which featured a sub-section on local rugby.
