Porty Car Crime

Post by Jamesie » 14 Feb 2005, 23:26

Well I won't forget this Valentine's Day in a while - went out to get in the car at ten to eight this morning and the car wasn't where I'd left it! It was found pretty much written off in Magdalene at half four this afternoon.

To add insult to injury if I make a claim on my insurance I'll lose two years of my no claims bonus and get peanuts for the car. But if I don't claim, I'll have to pay the Police costs of transporting the car from Magdalene to a garage in Macmerry!

Happy Valentines day...grrr!

Sorry to hear about this, Jamesie :( .

Last night there was a group of around 8 youths going along Porty High Street banging into most cars and shop windows on their way. Getting a bit tired of it all.

Feel really sorry for you Jamesie. Did the police say if there had been any more car thefts recently? I had thought things were calming down on that front but obviously not

If they were going along the High Street, were they not captured on CCTV?

Yesterday when I walked along the High St, there were three premises with smashed windows. Two of them were charity shops, coincidence? I wonder ? or just sheer badness.

Sorry to hear about your car Jamesie. It cost us over £100 to get Mr S's motor bike out of the garage in Macmerry and despite only minor(we thought) damages, the bike was still deemed a right off.

Sorry to hear about your car Jamesie. We recently had the back windscreen of ours smashed in but luckily nothing was stolen. Still.... it makes a change from the wing mirrors :?

Sorry to hear about that Jamesie. Been there done that, and of course the thief has never been caught. It makes your blood boil.

Jamesie I am very sorry to learn this. I mistakenly believed this type of thing was getting better but it seems not. Once again the tiny minority spoil it for the majority. Makes my blood boil too.

Jamesie,
Sorry to hear about this - what a crap thing to happen. Know the garage at Macmerry...sounds like quite a few of us do! I've only had a car stolen once and it was an absolute nightmare scenario for us that time because of complications, but whatever the circumstances it's still awful.

Thanks for the condolences - I've calmed down a bit now, but I'm still annoyed that even if they are caught they'll probably just be sent on holiday for being bored.

Woke up this morning to hear the alarm going at the Unionist Club on Windsor Place - are hordes of neerdowells flocking to Portobello under the cover of darkness?!

I went down to Macmerry yesterday and noticed that my Edinburgh Capitals Ice Hockey baseball cap has been nicked too.

It's pretty distinctive- black with two straight red stripes on the peak, with a cat like logo embroidered on the front.

Now given that about 200 people attend each Capitals game, not many of these caps have been sold. So if anyone spots a 14-17 year old ned wandering about Porty with one on feel free to apprehend him!

I think I'm right in saying they don't have CCTV in Porty High Street :)

There are only two CCTV cameras in Portobello. One is doing a fine job in Rosefield Park, the other is outside Portobello Police Station. The latter has a view of Porty High Street, or a section of it at least, but its main function is really the security of the station itself. The Police would like more extensive CCTV coverage in Portobello, as would many of its residents, but there is no funding at present.

Just out of curiosity.... why have one on the police station, would it not be better placed further away from the Police station to extend the viewable area, The police could always look out the window instead of looking at a monitor!

And yes I know....Curiosity killed the Cat!!!

Yes I agree, as long as it was during the day, as rumour has it there is no policeman in the station during the night :?

This was true until very recently, but the station is now again manned 24 hours a day.

Arrest made last night and confession made. Probably only get a slap on the wrist, but it left me with some grain of satisfaction this morning!

As they've confessed they'll more than certainly tender a guilty plea and get a slap on the wrist rather than go near a court. Suppose it depends if the Fiscal owns a Micra too :D

I'm very glad to hear that Bob :) thanks :)
What a little fountain of local information you are  :)
If there was a round of questions at the PCATS quiz tonight on local issues, I'm sure the POL's would come out tops with you in the team :!:

All part of the service ma'aam. The other news story from Porty Police Station is that Bob Wardrop, the Inspector has announced his retirement. A decent guy - he'll be missed.

Jamesie - glad to hear they caught the beggars. I was prompted by your success to phone the police re an update for my own situation.

2 attempted car thefts in 1993(!!) One guy admitted to both and I was told he'd go to court in about 6 months.
I never heard anything again, so I phoned at the weekend. (Got a return phonecall this morning). "Oh, I thought someone would have told you," said Mr. Policeman. "He pled guilty so it didn't go to court".
Apparently there is a fair bit of plea bargaining goes on so things don't have to go to court, he was up for about 8 charges in all.
I hope your villain goes to court, he may do as he did get away with your car.

My brother who lives in Brunstane Road was sitting watching TV on Saturday night when he got the huge front window of his house put in!! Apparently there is a 16 year old girl going around doing this to houses, 2 in Bedford Terrace and one in mountcasle that I know of. They know who it is but can't catch her at it.

Tyres Slashed

Post by Ed » 21 Feb 2005, 15:05

About a month after I moved into Northfield (Summer 2004), the two pavement side tyres of my car were slashed. No reason, no motive. They never caught anyone. A day off work and eighty quid later.

The car was parked outside my house and the incident took place on a Saturday night (surprise, surprise).

Been nothing since which made me think it was a random act of idiocy. Now I have the car wired to the mains, there won't be a next time :blob6: :cwm21: :angryfire: :bom:
