Timed Out

I seem to be getting 'timed-out' when I am writing a more lengthy reply to a thread. This has happened on several occassions and I have lost everything I have written and been asked to log in again. Is this happening to anyone else? Am I doing something wrong? Are my longer replies just boring and being booted off before they reach the public

(Please don't answer that last one).

Help.

Serioulsy, i have been getting "Critcal Error" warnings recently and have been kicked oot. However, I think the latter issue is due to my wireless connection.

The curious thing is that it happens every time I have a rant about something

. Have I installed a 'we wont post your rant because we know you'll regret it later - and especially if there is suspicion that PMT could be involved' software on my machine without knowing about it....?

its happened to me too - the work around that I use is to skip merrily through my back button on the browser until hurrah! the missing text reappears.

I then copy it and go forward again until I'm back in the live window and paste it in...

I suspect the 'correct' thing to do would be to compose our lengthy stuff on a word processor/text document and then copy it over appropriately.

Mr M, I have found that this strategy is not as reliable as it used to be as I keep getting "Warning-Page expired" when hitting the back button. Its very frustrating.

Only the other day I composed a lengthy thesis congratulating the Council on their vision and leadership and badoom. I lost the lot.

Thanks for the tips, Mr M. I had thought of copying and pasting from a word document but it does seem like a lot of bother. Glad it's not just me that is experiencing this - thought I was doing something wrong or ...

This is a weird one. I know Bob and Marya have the same problems. However I also know a lot of other folk do not...

So...

<ol><li>Do you ever (i.e. regularly) have to logon to the forum?</li>
<li>Do you set the Log me on automatically each visit checkbox?</li>
<li>And (finally) do you think you are idle/composing for > 10 minutes (this is something i can easy change) when kicked out?</li></ol>

Wangi I get timed out but as Mr Magnolia says just pressing the back button on my browser gets me back to my message and I don't even have to copy and paste

I was experiencing this problem as well and there is nothing more frustrating than spending ages on a deeply-felt and considered post to discover you have lost the whole lot, as happened to me on more than one occasion.

My solution is to copy the message BEFORE previewing or posting. That way if you find you have been timed out you can simply open a new reply box and paste in your message. If you get into the habit of doing this you will never lose a post.

Strangely, I used to be able to just hit the back button to retrieve the message in these situations but that no longer works.

I think we have discussed increasing the session length. The drawback of this is that it results in exaggerated reports of the number of users online.

I never use the 'log me on automatically' checkbox and therefore always have to log on. There probably are occasions when I spend more than 10 mins composing. If I navigate away from composing at any point and use the back button to go back I now invariably find that I have lost my post.

Yes. I never log on automatically and I always log off when I disappear as I never know when I may reappear (see below). I only log on to write stuff.

I can't remember the last time I thought about anything for longer than 10 mins.

But my rare musings are oft interrupted by a squealing magnoliette.
(Or worse...)

Wangi, I don't always log in when I'm looking at the forum but obviously log in to post a reply. It may be that I am more than 10 minutes when writing - not checked this but it is possible. And I have tried backspacing but my text has disappeared when I do this.

Don't know if this helps solve the problem.

And wrote this reply really fast just incase

I have a different problem.

Just in the last week or so I've noticed that when I compose a post and want to insert an emoticon, if I click on "view more emoticons" that new window replaces my existing one with my post on it and there's nothing to go back to???

Don't know if I'm making myself clear here, sorry!

Okay, I've increased the session timeout from 10 minutes to 1 hour - before if you were composing a message for >10 minutes then you'd be logged out when it came to posting the message.

Let me know if this solves the problem. Thing is 1 hour is the default value for this, someone else in the deepest past of this forum changed it to 10 minutes for some reason or other...

Wangi,

I normally use Opera version 7. I'm trying this through Blueyonder Internet Explorer and et voila

Emoticons aplenty with no problem.

I'll see Ali about it when he gets in. Maybe he can do some tweaking.

Wangi, I've never had the time out problem, and I'm always logged on automatically. The <10 minutes has never affected me.
