Whan an interesting list Gemini. Some of the job titles are so far removed from today it makes you smile...town crier and straw-hat maker

Eh, hang on a minute. Portobello does have a resident Town Crier. He doesn't do much crying in Portobello but he does do a lot for the Lord P. He resides in Stanley Street.

Fascinating list Gemini, including the name of the people who used to live in our house before it was subdivided. Strangely though there seems to be no mention of fishwives...

Interesting site.

I particularly liked some of the professions with suitable addresses

Ferrier, Henry, blacksmith, Leadwork lane

Fraser, James, letter-carrier, e. Union place

Gray, John, undertaker and joiner, Kirk place

Hilton, Mrs., midwife, 1 Hope street

Marshall, Capt. W., E.I.C.S., Wellington villa

Marshall, John, plumber, 15 Bath street

And I wonder if these two were working together

Fraser, Mrs., sick nurse, and lodgs., Wilson's park

Johnston, Alexander, flesher, High street
