Love sick frogs

Post by teddygirl » 17 Mar 2005, 23:11

Can anyone help me, I have three female frogs desperately seeking a man. They are obviously full of eggs and have been wandering around the garden for three days now croaking feebly for a mate with no success. So if anyone out there has a spare male frog I would be exceedingly grateful. He could of course be returned after he has done the needful. :kermit: :love3:

Sorry Teddygirl, but this has to be the most surreal post I've ever seen  Of course, I have had a few glasses of wine tonight, and I did wonder if I was imagining...... :D

TG...assuming I did have a frog (which I don't apart from a squashed one on my driveway..oops) how would I know if it was male or female :?

Foxy, it is a bit difficult if you have nothing to compare it to but the males tend to be smaller and slimmer. Also if you had several,it would be obvious which were males and which were females from their activities :?
I did have two males last year but there is no sign of them so they either haven't survived the winter or wandered off, which is difficult as my garden is enclosed by walls.
I'm very fond of my frogs (and toads, but we won't go into that just now)
and don't want them to be distressed.

Thanks, Foxy, but not too skinny mind, or that could be a female who has already spawned. :D

Strange coincidence, but there are people in my office complaining about horny toads hanging about their gardens and front doors.

Perhaps their ying should hook up with your yang.

Thanks Lizzie, I have visited Epykats pond but I think she had a shortage of adult frogs last year (we won't mention the cat's involvement) but maybe some have returned, can but hope.

Good luck, TG! I love frogs...but don't know how to find a male frog or two. Why don't you try the RSPCA for advice? They're usually very helpful.

Ed, I don't think mini-ed would part with his frog by the looks of it :D

Dadaist, this is what happens when a frog tries to get it on with a toad:

I can't think of anything more impressive to have on a CV, Marya unless it's a toad dating agency, my toads aren't out of hibernation yet !
Don't worry they were all just babies last year so are not mature enough yet to mate.

In my excitement,I forgot so say how nice it was to actually meet you too at last :D

Just away out to see if there is more spawn yet......................

Was out at Vogrie Country Park today Teddygirl. There's HUNDREDS of frisky frogs out there...and some amorous toads. Of course, I hasten to add, it is an offence to remove any spawn from the wild [-X and wish to make it quite clear that there was nothing dodgy about my dealings with Teddygirl.
Some sage (another rarity :lol:) advice from Homer, who learned it through bitter experience as a boy and has never forgotten it ;
never keep toad spawn and frog spawn in the same container as they hatch at different times and the frog tadpoles eat the toad spawn... :(

I was out frog hunting in the garden today but couldn't find any  Suspect they've migrated next door again since Selma the Slaughterer hasn't been out much......

Congratulations Teddygirl on your forthcoming arrivals. The boys come from very good stock (and a conservation area!).

Do post a photo of the babies when they are born.

I'm shocked at the lack of condemnation of procreation out of wedlock.

Thanks for the good wishes, I'll keep you posted on their progress. I'm sure the boys are from very good stock but when it comes to looks they aren't a patch on my girls who are beautiful shades of green and almost yellow in one case (no it's not jaundice) The boys are more of a muddy colour. I'm thrilled to bits with them though. :D

News Round told me this morning that SpringWatch was reporting that frogs have suffered especially badly (ie died  ) as a result of our numerous false starts to this years spring.

(they didn't actually say 'numerous' - thats too big a word for me at that time of day, but now I'm fully awake, even if I'm not actually working, but sitting back with another cup of tea)

Well hopefully spring is definitely here to stay and our frogs will survive.
Mine actually spawned earlier last year,15th March to be precise,I keep dates like that(it's a woman thing) and despite having a few showers of hailstones the tadpoles all hatched successfully although slowly.
Who knows, maybe in a few years time they won't hibernate at all if the weather keeps changing the way it has been

Oh yes Marya, hundreds of happy little tadpoles are swimming around the pond. :D My next problem will be getting rid of most of them as my garden isn't big enough to sustain them all once they turn into froglets.
Anyone out there looking for tadpoles ?
