Portobello Online vacancies

Post by Bob Jefferson » 20 Mar 2005, 11:00

As the website expands I'm finding it increasingly difficult to keep on top of everything, along with all my other projects and commitments. Here are some areas where I could use some assistance. Please feel free to volunteer, the more the merrier:

1. Local business directory - there are probably around 200 local shops and businesses. I have made a start on a database but there is still a lot of work to do. I need a small team of people to help out.

2. What's On - I need someone dedicated to this section. Your job will be to liaise with the Town Hall, the Library, Community Centre, Portobello Reporter etc to keep our events guide up to date. Often, the only indication that an event is taking place will be a flyer or poster. It will be your responsibility to make sure we don't miss anything. You will have authoring rights to directly input the info using our dead simple to use content management system.

3. Groups - Your job is to ensure that our local groups section is accurate and comprehensive. You will liaise with the 55+ groups in the local area. Again you will be given authoring rights to maintain this database.

4. Social Convenor - your responsibility is to arrange events for Forum members.

You will receive no salary, no expenses and you will be sacked if you do not do the job properly. But you will be part of the team and it might look good on your CV. Still interested? Please get in touch.

Well, he said, trying to disguise his hitherto unbridled enthusiasm for thankless tasks, being as how I've done nothing for the forum yet, I hereby VOLUNTEER TO AUDITION for a bit part in the small team!

Gosh, you're a brave man, Mr M, but you don't know what you're getting into... Once Mr J has your details your "bit part" will expand inexorably - trust me!

Yep! That 'bit part' will swell to proportions you never dreamed of, once Bob 'Half-nelson' Jefferson carries out a bit of quick delegation on you

Marya, have you started sending people spam offering them certain illicit medications, by any chance?!

Pay no heed mr magonlia, you have passed the audition and you are now an integral and indispensable member of the local business directory development team. Congratulations!

I need at least two more volunteers, preferably people with some free time during the day as it will involve meeting the traders concerned to explain the concept and persuade them to sign up. I can think of three members off-hand who would fit the bill perfectly. Would you care to volunteer or shall I start suggesting names?

I can also think of at least three members who could easily take on the Events Organiser job.

What's On and Groups are still up for grabs.

Pretty please?

OK, someone to organise do's. Not only am I prepared to use emotional blackmail, I can also bring peer pressure to bear.

I think you would be the perfect person for this role. Does anyone else agree?

The Forum is very good but there's a lot more that the Web site could provide especially to people outwith Portobello. These could include details of B&Bs, Hotels, Restaurants, Pubs, leisure facilities, meeting rooms etc.

We should aim to have every local meeting/event on the site.

Let's have photos of how nice it is on the Prom. and even have a Web camera to show activity especially in the Summer months.

I'd like to show the weather charts for Portobello both forecast, current and historical. As I work in Milngavie I know that Portobello enjoys very good weather compared to the West coast. Let's advertise this.
I nominate Brian for all vacancies!

I certainly remember Brian volunteering to help out with the Local Business Directory so I'll be holding him to that.

Seconded! No-one can play air guitar quite like Epykat and she was very keen on the last night out to organise the next POL night out.

Thanks Marya. I will arrange a meeting soon to discuss tactics but we still need a few more volunteers for this project. Even if you can only contribute a couple of hours, that would help.

Talk about being misquoted

Sorry Mr M but since my hubby may well be starring in the footy (especially if we score and he's right behind the goals - unlikely as that may be!) Dr Who will have to be taped.......

Now your making me feel really low. I decided that a trip to Italy probably equated to the thick end of a new cooker and that on balance I'd rather be here painting....

I suspect Jamsie's away too.

I've volunteered to help with the Business Directory when I'm back in Porty. I'll happily doorstep businesses as well as phoning them.

Excellent. Well done Jamesie. You are hereby elected as the person responsible for the 'What's On' section - and you had better get to work fast because it's starting to look a bit bare again. I'll pm you more details.

Our volunteers so far are:

Local Business Directory - Brian McCrow, Marya, mr magnolia, dccairns, Porty.

Social convenor - Epykat

What's On - Jamesie

That just leaves a vacancy for the Local Groups section. Any takers?

And while I'm handing out the credits, a big thank you to wangi who has undertaken the not insubstantial task of photographing all of the businesses and offered to host the images as well.

And not forgetting Paul (makes it happen) and Jane (makes it look pretty). What a team!

A couple of more people willing to doorstep the businesses and sell the idea wouldn't go amiss. They will already have a letter explaining what the directory is about, so it shouldn't be too arduous a task. We stand to make a fair bit of money for Portobello Online from this exercise so your effort will be very worthwhile. Let me know if you can help out.

Bob

I wish to apologise for my inactivity on the "What's On" section. If I'm being honest I've bitten off more than I can chew with what else I've got on and therefore if anyone else would like to take over, please fee free.
