The New Gallery

Post by DG » 28 Mar 2005, 09:25

Good to see the gallery opened - (on the previous Projections site). Looks great, nice jewellry and bits and bobs. The new owners seem to have put a lot of thought into the place.

My only concern is the parking on the pavement area at the side of the gallery. When did this start, is it the new owners and surely this is not legal parking. What about people (mainly children) passing when these cars are reversing out onto the road. There appear to be 2 blind spots - one at the top of the street and the other coming around from the gallery. I've never seen parking before at this area. The other day there was even a wee Pizza Hut delivery car stuck on the end  !

Does anyone know what is happening here?

This does not take away from the fact that the gallery looks great - it may have nothing to do with the new owners.

DG, I've often seen parking there before now - including the Pizza Hut delivery car!! Don't know the 'legality' of it, though!

On reflection I probably should have separated these 2 issues into 2 different threads - one to welcome the new gallery and the other about the parking. However, I was under the impression that the area at the top of Regent Street was owned by the gallery but I could be wrong. If this has been going on for some time then it sounds like it has nothing to do with the owners of the gallery.

DG, I am also very concerned about the parking here. I'm fairly sure that this piece of ground belongs to the owner of the shop, like the little piece of land attached to Artefacts.

As private land, my understanding of the situation is that it is not illegal to park there BUT it is certainly very dangerous to mount the kerb and even more so to reverse back over the kerb at such a busy cormer. The parking attendants are unable to deal with moving offences and are therefore powerless in this situation. I'm going to pop into Portobello Police Station tomorrow to have a chat with one of the community beat cops and I will get back to you.

The parking here seems to be a fairly recent phenomenon. I'm not sure who started it, but High St shoppers are now starting to treat it as a legitimate parking area.

Frankly, this is an accident waiting to happen and we need to take action now before it's too late.

PS, I will try to bring the matter up at the CC meeting this evening if there is a police representative present.

must have a look in the new gallery soon

re the parking - for some time there's regularly been at least one car parked there. I always assumed that the car belonged to whoever was working in the old gallery. TBH, I haven't really been bothered about the safelty aspect of it as it's on a par with lots of other parking in the area anyway

new shop does look good, glad it hasn't just become an empty shop. Hope its not as expensive though for framing.

Wasn't going to say anything but I have seen a certain forum member park there too. Might be a different one to the one you are implying though

Could there be more than one that irresponsible

Interesting development. I have been informed that a 'No Parking' sign has appeared on this spot. I assume that the new owners are responsible for this and from their point of view I can imagine that having cars blocking their window is not considered terribly good for business.

A pattern seems to be emerging where the new gallery parks one car on the bit of pavement they own before placing a makeshift 'No Parking' sign in the space where a second car often used to park. I guess parking there is pretty similar to driving over the pavement to get on the drive of a house - care needed. :)

More recently I have seen three cars parked on this space. The comparison with a private driveaway is interesting. However, in the latter case the Council have at least acknowledged the right to drive over the pavement by lowering the kerb. I'm still waitng for the 'official' police response.

I noticed that a chemist at one end of Rankeillor Street on the Southside of the Other World is in the same situation re pavement and has a notice saying 'Authorised Vehicles Only'. With a picture on it that implies that unauthorised vehicles will be towed away!

Anyway, I've been in Artisan a few times now - they've got excellent cards both arty and funny. And even ones of the Ormelie and the Portobello Bar  . A good addition to our array of cards shops.

Very nice people - turns out they used to have the Seahaven and I've had drinkies with one of the sons at PHS FP RFC! [El P was there too, I hasten to add!]. Small world.

And they are also v nice in the new computer print shop. Will order if they don't have what you need in stock.

I'm a fan of Artisan too. I went in to sign them up to our new business directory and came out having purchased two necklaces and two Mike Kinane limited prints (well, one was of the bottom of Bath Street with Granny's Attic so couldn't resist it!).
I'm picking them up tomorrow as I've paid them to frame them too. Some saleswoman I am #-o

Yes, Ed! It's their mummy and the taller brother at least - and maybe Mr P Snr. And a daughter-in-law.

That was me and I confess. However, I stopped parking there round about the same time as the above was posted. I took cognaisance of what Bob and other were saying.

To be absolutely frank i only ever parked there to annoy the jerk that worked in projections. He was not a good neighbour.

I went into look for a card today, ended up have a chat with Mr P about the family, grandkids etc. All the family and daughter in laws work there.

Bought a beautiful necklace and a print - both for presents I hasten to add

Apparently they are adding gifts for men.

They have some really nice jewellery pieces - defo worth a look! and really competitive prices - will give Mulberries a run for their money.
