Portobello Institute of Social Sciences Community Awards 2004/5
The Institute is an independent think tank founded in 1975 and based in Selcraig House. Its Awards Panel was established to recognize the contribution of individuals towards the common good of the community. Its awards for 2004/5 are as follows;
Community Activist of the Year
Diana Cairns, honorary secretary of the Campaign Against the Superstore. The panel recognizes the tremendous amount of work Ms Cairns has put into the campaign both through tireless administrative work, fund raising, publicity, leaflet distribution and setting an example by her leadership. Her production of the Porty calendar is widely recognized as a tour de force as well as a major money earner for the campaign. A spokesperson for the panel said ,‘ Diana’s work rate over the past eighteen months has been colossal . We are extremely fortunate to have somebody with her get up and go in our midst.’

Portobello Institute of Social Sciences Community Awards 200
Whilsst I have no quibble with The Portobello Institute for Social Sciences selecting Mark Ballard and Susan Deacon as politician award winners, why has our very own local councillor Mrs Child been left out? During the PCATS campaign she has always kept a high profile at rallies, jumble sales, coffee mornings and the like. She has bought umpteen raffle tickets, cakes, confectionery, paperback books, bric-a-brac and a calender. Surely this must be an oversight?

I,too, have no idea what criteria the Institute's awards panel uses to reach its decisions but I don't think it awards people for merely keeping up a high profile like Cllr Child. I also don't think that it is solely concerned with the Campaign Against the Superstore. There must be other factors they have to bear in mind such as the attempted ,behind the scenes sell off of bits of Portobello , the shift of the Pitz football site to The golf course; all done behind without our knowledge. I can't ,for the life of me,imagine the Institute would find that these sort of actions would merit an award; rather the opposite I am sorry to say
