Hello Portocat

Found this in the Local Groups [although the link on the POL Home page is not quite working properly!!]

CRAIGENTINNY GARDEN ALLOTMENT ASSOCIATION
Graham Parnell

The Association celebrated its 80th Anniversary in March 2003. Over recent years the allotment site at Telferton (off Portobello Road) has been threatened by housing development, but is currently still intact.

Thanks for all your help so far. I tried the G Parnell on the links page - Craigentinny etc last week but my email bounced back so I reached a dead end with that, hence the posting! I will try all of your suggested contacts until I get the right person.

I've been told that it will be most likely another 5 or 6 years before my name gets to the top of the list

My own fault really for prevaricating about it all these years.

I emailed the address you gave me but not heard anything back yet. We are applying for a council one at the moment, but am also going to keep trying the telferton option. It seems there are big waiting lists for all of them. Any farmers with a spare bit of land out there who want to make a bit of extra cash?!

Portocat don't listen to PoP and Marya, my pal; Rob Cowan, willl be delighted to take your call. He has been an allotment owner for about 17 years and knows all the details. Don't know if he is on the Committee but woul be surprised if he's not.

We were told it would be about 3 years before we got to the top but in actual fact it was only about a year

I think it was due to the fact that some people ahead of us had moved away and there was a bit of a glut with the current users getting on a bit and....em....well.......dying...
I have to say there are currently a few plots at Telferton which are really uncared for.

Result! I'm really excited. There was a message on my answer phone today asking me if I was still interested in an allotment as a 1/2 plot has come up and I'm next on the list. Can't say that Homer seems over the moon about it

Well done! This means that Homer and I can sit in the shed with a beer while we watch you and Mr E digging

. We're about third up on the right so maybe we'll be neighbours because the one next to ours was pretty crappy.

The plan at the moment is for onions, potatoes, peas, sweetcorn, raspberries and brambles. I hadn't planned on the brambles, but they seem quite well established already so it would be a shame to move them

Everyone I met today was really friendly and very encouraging. I've already met my neighbours who have the other half of the plot. They were very approachable and are beginners like ourselves.

I didn't see the neighbours on the other side, though I did admire their sprouts. He's meant to be very nice and hardworking, but I'm told she prefers to sit drinking in their shed, giving the excuse that their new garden takes up all her energy nowadays. Sounds like a right skiver to me.

She is a bit of a skiver although she did make an appearance on Saturday I believe. I think she was waiting on her nice, approachable, hard working hubby to lift some sprouts. .......

Yep the Clampits are moving in next door

I was very impressed with your plot. Not only does it have lots of healthy looking plants, you have a wee gate and a cobbled path. Really sweet

I like my pallet strewn plot though and today's task is sourcing a compost bin from the cooncil. I've already bought, from Woodwares, my potatoes for chitting (note the easy use of technical jargon there), some onion sets, a packet of sweetcorn seeds .........and several metres of black plastic sheeting

Do you know what happened to the previous incumbants? There's a suspicious big hump on our lottie that I've told Matthew is a lazy bed for potatoes but Homer said is probably a grave. You can guess who Matthew believes...

Allotment spies have confirmed the presence last week of two officials from Bett Homes snooping around the allotments. Not good news. Maybe now we have a new Council they'll be trying their hand for planning permission again.
