Another good new eaterie in Portobello

On Saturday, El Presidente (Rtd) and I went to sample the new restaurant at the Foresters Arms. It was VERY good.

We had thought it would be the usual pubfare [not that there's anything wrong with that!], but there was a nice selection of beef, chicken, fish, oriental and pasta dishes. No pizza though!

Good service too. And the chef came to our table to discuss my moo's milk allergy which was a good sign.

Only open at lunch time and from 6.30 to 8 in evening, but the chap said that they would be opening later if they get the demand/customers. And certainly they did not turn away a group of four who came in at 7.50!

It's cheaper than Sizzlers and less crowded - and you cannot hear the bar! Which was just as well as we were told that Mr Lizzie and others were 'singing' cowboy songs. :roll:

Highly recommended!!

This is good to hear, Poppy. Must give it a try. I was checking through the eateries in the Portobello Directory and reolised how well Porty is doing in this area.

Well reminded, DG, about the Directory! .... I mentioned it to the chap [= maitre d'/waiter] and he said they [=him+chef] would be interested - so whoever's responsible should git their ass along there PDQ! :wink:

Forgot to say that they rent the kitchen and lounge from the pub, so really you pay them for the food and the bar for the drink!!

The Forresters have been doing lunches for quite a while now, since Mr Kelly sold it. Evening menu has been fairly recent.

I would reccommend the Forresters for a meal, good food, reasonable prices and the waiter (Keith) is a pleasent chap too!

The chef is not the same one as was doing the lunches only as far as I can gather, so it's good to know that the Management/Owner of the FA is commited to good food.

Robin!, is Keith the slim Antipodean chappy?

Poppy, I think Bob is the person to be contacted regarding getting into the directory. I think Forresters is already there under the pub section. Would be worth a mention under the restaurant section. Perhaps the chef / manager could contact Bob.

DG, I think Bob should take poor long-suffering Froglette there for a romantic early evening meal to check it out AND to recruit the lads for an entry in the restaurant section, don't you!!!??? :D :wink:

After tapas at Dalriada on Saturday and a takeaway last night, we won't be eating out anywhere for a while!

BTW Marya - you were right, it was far too spicy, and £11:50 for over-cooked King Prawn means we will be sticking with the Prince Balti in future.

I was out and about today on LBD duty anyway - Poppy knows why I was so keen to escape the house :D - so went along to the new restaurant at the Forester's Arms. Really nice staff. Had a good chat with the chef and have come back with plenty of delicious sounding menus (all reasonably priced ) to peruse so look out for their entry in the directory pretty soon.
It's great to see another new business venture opening up in Porty. I wish them all the very best .

Poppy thanks for that - will try lunch at the weekend.

Last time we were at Dalriada for tapas wasn't impressed - small portions at huge prices. Tasty enough though but not value for money.

Went for lunch today. It was really busy and the guy doing the serving was rushed off his feet.

Perhaps I made a bad choice but I have not had smash since I was in school. Perhaps smaller menu with less choice would mean more fresh produce.

It is reasonably priced though.
