Good photos Dada....I can almost feel the atmosphere

Love the banner in front of the castle...hadn't realised that was there...historic moments

Good photies dada.

The magnoliettes favourite sight was the red Welsh dragon with his head stuck in the trees - must have been in the same place at the same time as your food van shots.

They also voted the toilets very good, and wanted to take one to our home. Hmm, must do some more cleaning...

Magnoliettes least favourite was the huge queue at the ice cream van and mr m's refusal to stand in it.

Mr and mrs m's least favourite was having the second half of lunch whilst suddenly in the middle of a lot of multi-national heavies dressed head to toe in black, with masks etc and looking like they were just waiting for something to go off.

Anyway, after 2 1/2 hours, our sector of the meadows hadn't yet moved very far and we came home before the magnoliettes exploded! Must have been a big number of people there, from what might be described as a 'broad church'...

What a turn out at the MPH demo yesterday! Our group was waiting in line for approx 1 1/2 hours to kick of the march, it was an amazing spectacle, with people of all ages, religous backgrounds and colour.

Even more amazing, amongst the 250.000 people attending, we bumped into dcairns and hawkeye. Both dcairns and I were supporting our Porty says no to the Superstore T shirts, quite a few people stopped me and offered their congratulations to the Porty Community for our stance against the developers.

What was rather upsetting though, was the mass amount of Police present

IMO, way over the top, it was apparent from the outset, that
people were there not to cause trouble but to show their disgust by way of a peaceful demonstration against the appalling conditions imposed through unjust trade policies in Africa and other 3rd world countries.

All in all a fantastic day - let's hope that the G8 leaders take the public's opposition to these issues on board.

I walked past Holyrood Palace the other day and was pleased to see the Police have finally seen sense and decided to protect us from the Queen and her pesky gang. I applaud their presence and hope the barrier is good enough to preotect the people of Abbeyhill from Liz & Phil, not to mention all their troublemaking asbo spawn!

*So* fed up we didn't get to go...although by all accounts it would have been a nightmare with our youngest who doesn't like a) crowds and b) noise and c) heat... Still, I wasn't going to march with the family anyway so it wouldn't have been my problem!

We watched News 24 most for the afternoon though, and other half recognised lots of people. I didn't even recognise Jack McConnell, although that smarmy smile is now etched horribly on my mind...

An astute observation. It's normally the police the estimates come from, isn't it?

The 'police' normally come up with the low number. I've always assumed that 'police' means 'police authority' and therefore connected with some sort of system for counting, but not entirely untainted by politics...

I don't have any arguement myself with the 225,000 figure - it's equal to 50% Edinburghs population in the meadows and along a shortish march route.

As an aside, the magnolian father and associates waited 7hrs in a line yesterday before giving up and going to the pub. Certainly when we left all the paths in the meadows that we could see were full of people still waiting to march/shuffle.
