Saturday night and nothing to do

Post by Novastar » 08 Jul 2005, 21:50

Well not yet (obviously) as it's Friday.

But with my usual drinking partner away and my local closed, I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations of places to go. Somewhere in the East of Edinburgh, not too formal, no clubs and no risk of getting my head kicked in (that rules Kings Road out then  )

So where do all the single 20 somethings go??? :D

my local closed
The Forries is closed  ?

How long for? Messrs Poppy and Lizzie will be distraught come Tuesday when they return from NZ.

Or is it only Friday you go there. And if so, why aren't you there now????

No the Forries is my mate's local - it's just the place I drink in Porty. Mine's the Bridge at Foot of Leith Walk. Has been shut for the last 4-5 weeks with no explanation.

So any ideas Poppy?

Not single but am under 30.
We tend to go to the cinema (UGC Unlimited card) as we are saving for our wedding and it can be quite a cheap night (as long as no pick 'n' mix is involved!).
Last night we went to see The Decent, the film was fairly good for what it is (horror, lot's of jumpy moments) and for the first time in a cinema I experienced someone actually scream at a film (my partner!).
The UGC card is pretty good, if you see 2 movies per month then it effectively pays for itself. From the current list of 10 films we have seen 7 of them :D
A lot like love - chick flick but actually quite good, better than I thought it would be
Batman Begins - It was good, probably not as good as the first one but better than all the others. Christian Bale was better as batman/wayne that I thought he would be.
Mr and Mrs Smith - Superb but then I think Angelina is the bee's knees.
Sin Cty - I thought it was superb but it's probably not everyone's taste.
Star Wars EP3 - Was ok, about the same as EP2 but better than EP1 but some of the dialogue is terrible - particularly the "NNNNNOOOOOOOOOO" scene.
The Descent - Descent horror film if you like that sort of thing.
War of the worlds - Nic loved it, I thought it was very average.

Meaning??????
Mr E and I are just getting to that OTHER age. The one where the brat pack are flying the coop ('faster' she shouts) and we can go out unchained at the weekend. Last night we thought we'd try out Leith. The first trendy place we tried was too much of a shock to the system. Never downed a voddie so fast (well, maybe that's a slight exaggeration - they have gone faster!). It was just so NOISY :? We then found a nice wee oldies pub round the corner where we could have a seat and a blether  There was loads of young tottie for you to try you luck with Novastar - get yourself out there!
Enough of your nonsense - get back to the Play Pen!

For fine looking ladies? Well that'll be The Lighthouse for sure, on The Shore. Of course you've got a good chance of getting a fine looking lad too.
I'd prefer Sirius myself for a nignt out, or Kougar Lounge (sp)... There's heaps more...
Love the fish cakes in the King's Wark - but that's diverting slightly from the point.

Oh I don't know, maybe a fish cake is what Nova is really after but is too shy to say.

Good grub at Kings Wark - not too far off topic as Novie needs to know where wine and dine a burd once he meets one!
Mr Poppy took me there recently, althought it was my dad who paid as a reward for Mr P clearing out his roof guttering!

Poppy, all you need do is give "Novie" one more buying signal and you should have in the bag.

I take it you saw me in there then? It was the Lighthouse and it was awful - must be an age thing  Mr E only told me about the fire bomb thing after we'd left. He takes me to the nicest places! Although, I was intrigued at how he knew about that pub in the first place, a bit off his usual stomping ground........ :?

God Nooooooooo.....
Must have just been bought out as it used to be owned by the Landlady there. And it used to be so nice.
Will probably now turn into some "trendy wine bar" and you'll never see the same staff in there twice (I've only ever seen 3 people behind the bar in there before - **sigh** a proper pub....)
BTW - update on the shore area. Went down there on Sunday afternoon for a pint after doing a bit of shopping. On my way back some little ---- tried to mug me on Henderson Row. Have lived here 5 years and never had any problems - not even in the middle of the night on Saturday. and then it happens at 6 o'clock on a sunny day on a busy street.
What can you do.....

Before moving to Porty I lived on Gordon St, so have been in the Bridge a good few times, although prefered the Persevere.

The landlady in question is PoP's Aunt and is a Porty resident. What a small world!! Even his Aunt wouldn't let PoP do Krakatoke in her pub.

Trust he/she didn't succeed in intimidating you Novastar? Did you report it to the Police? We lived in Leith for 11 years and never had any problems, but I've heard from friends of a similar incident on Easter Road recently. As there was no damage done and the would-be mugger was about 15 or so they didn't report it. I think they should have :?

No - would have fought back if I hadn't be ladden down with shopping. Like I said I've been here 5 years and never had a problem. Strange it happened when it did. Reported it purely because I wasn't the only one they were doing it to and the next victim might have been someone who couldn't defend themselves (old ladies walking back from Leith Walk etc).
