The Tie Factory?

Post by Epykat » 12 Jan 2004, 23:41

At the risk of being deemed snobby again ( ) I think this is just what Portobello needs. The shocking state of Anderson the Plumbers shop was a real eyesore and with the sad demise of Thomson's we were all in fear of that part of the High Street going into real decline. Happily though, when this opens (and presumably the fronts are done up) it means that all of the shops on that stretch are occupied again. The one next to the Glaziers still needs finished at the front though (what is that shop?)

Sorry, no you're not being dim! I couldn't remember what it was called but I think now it's Maddocks and Dick and as far as I know they already have a shop in the Royal Mile. They make ties (and maybe other things).

Shame on you people! You haven't been reading your 'Portobello Reporter' from cover to cover like you are supposed to. Check out this link (Tie makers move to Portobello) and don't let it happen again!

Oops! Sorry Bob, it won't happen again - I'll make sure I take it to bed with me (actually I don't think I got that one - that's my excuse)

And that's why we make it available online! Now please pay attention, because we will be asking questions later.

Anybody know why this shop is taking so long to open?

Noticed yesterday that there is a notice above their letterbox saying "Post for Maddox & Dick only, please" and there has been a bit more activity inside lately, so maybe they are opening soon? 8)

Bob, I don't seem to be able to access the Reporter when I click on it.
I have only ever had 1 copy delivered to me and that was just before last Christmas!

Mimpty, regrettably the online version of the Reporter has been offline for some time. It's our top priority but it is taking a lot longer than expected. When we do get the format sorted we will be putting up previous issues that you may have missed.

I just tried to access it too! Read Bob's post, and clicked - nada - and then got to Mimpty's post further down ! I miss my Portobello Recorder, since I moved. My new building doesn't get it.

Those of you in the Portobello area who don't get the traditional hard copy of the Reporter delivered might like to contact the paper. I'm sure the editor would like to know about this.

You can contact the Reporter at portobelloreporter@talk21.com

Thanks, Bob. Will do.
I don't know if tenement blocks with stair buzzers are just too awkward, I never get the Herald & Post either. Is that still on the go?

Yes, Mimpty the Herald and Post is still around. I live in a tenement block with an intercom buzzer. We go through periods where we don't get the Herald and Post, it's left on the bottom stair or, even worse, out in the street to get blow around on a windy day. But recently we've had it delivered no problem. As one of the sponsers of the Portobello Reporter, I know they are keen to hear from people who have not been receiving their copy. Seems to be an ongoing issue for them in certain areas.

DG,

I have used Bob's link and have e-mailed them just now. Hopefully my block will start getting the Reporter again.

Does anyone have an update? We seem to have been waiting a very long time for this tie shop to open.

Well, Bob I had heard some weeks ago that the owner of the tie factory has unfortunately had a heart attack and has been recovering for some time. The plans for the tie factory are to go ahead but with some delay due to this. Here's hoping he gets well soon.

Noticed yesterday that there's a For Sale (or maybe To Let; cannot recall  ) sign up for a 'ground floor development opportunity', so I suppose that the Tie Factory will not be going ahead. Which sadly means that the owner's heath is too bad for him to continue, poor man?

Even more   with regard to this - on the way home just now I noticed it actually says "LOWER ground floor..... " so that could be good news for the tie shop and its owner, then?

I thought that sign was next to Sizzlers not Tie Factory - or have they moved it?

I think it must apply to the basement under Sizzlers but maybe not. Maybe it's the basement under the Tie Factory - actually, if I'm being honest I don't know and I'm blethering

Looks like the Tie Factory is closer to being finished. They have new windows in and seem to near completion.

Wonder when it will open. It's been an empty space for some time now.

Shop is now open. I popped in yesterday to say hello and let them know about the business directory, and they got some timely publicity in today's EN:

Things are tighter but M&D still keeping ties to city

Should we commission a POL tie for formal occasions? Croquet matches, for example?

I own 2 ties - one for weddings and the other for funerals. I see no reason to buy a third. That would be extravagance.
