Candy the hamster

Introducing my friend's pet hamster Candy :

I will be looking after Candy this week while my friend and his girlfriend are on holiday. I will be going round to visit Candy as opposed to her coming to stay with Dada clan as we all agree that Oscar, my predatory cat, should not be allowed to get his teeth or claws anywhere near said rodent.

Back in the day my sister and I had a hamster, which my mum bought us from Dofos. After some thought we called him Harry. He had a basic cage which sat under the TV - this and that food, but nothing like the range of stuff that Candy has - did you know you could get Hamster Litter? And a mineral lick?

It's gratifying though that hamster poo hasn't evolved it's shape at all, and that old habits transferred through the genes still live on - scurrying, hoarding, nest-building, cage biting and the plastic ball walk.

When Harry died my mum bought me an ice-cream from the Vittoria.

I have owned many hamsters over the years. My first one was called Harry too. About a week after I got him "he" had three babies

I think I could write a book about the exploits of all my furry friends, they have caused quite a bit of damage over the years.

Candy looks a real sweetie though. :D

my parents were looking after the hamster of my nieces at their house when they were on holiday and my dad accidentially left the cage open, the small creature set off the burgler alarm at 2.00 am in the morning - the neighbours were not best pleased. Luckily they managed also to catch the offending rodent! :D

Our first hamster was called Chenka and she was orange and hairy (I once dyed my hair the exact same colour and was therefore christened Hamster Heid by my nearest and dearest but that's another story :D ). She escaped one day and came up in the shower room of our next door neighbour. She was promptly brought back, covered in cobwebs, in a jam jar by a very unhappy woman  Apart from that she ate a hole in the carpet and cost us half the deposit on the flat. We loved her though.
Enough of your nonsense - get back to the Play Pen!

Until this Easter my son had a hamster called Joe, though he should have been called Houdini because he was an expert in escaping. Once, after he had been missing for 3 days, we had just about given up hope of finding him again, but I put his cage down on the floor and hoped the lure of food and water would be too much.

At 2.30 a.m. I was awoken by my son who told me that he could hear Joe the Hamster moving around somewhere in his bedroom. Still half-asleep, we softly crept back to his room in the dark. The light from the street lamp revealed a small dark shape near the cage. I got down on my knees and held out a hamster treat. "Here Joe," I crooned, accompanied by my special lip smacking sound that I was convinced would work.
"Mum.." my son started to say.
"Sh! You'll frighten him," I reprimanded, while continuing with my best Johnny Morris impersonations.
"But Mum.."
"Sh!"

After about 10 minutes with no response from Joe I got exasperated and turned on a light. There was Joe in the cage, looking at me most quizzically and there on the floor was the rolled up sock that I had spent the last 10 minutes enticing. Oh, how we all laughed...

Classic!

Although, this story would have been much funnier if you had turned on the light to find a coiled up snake rather than a sock.
