When I moved to Portobello I started using my wife's dentist. I had previously had bad experiences with dentists but I'm happy to recommend Mr Krawawicz at 173 Dalkeith Road, tel 667 1352. Not particularly local perhaps but he is still prepared to take on NHS patients and he is a really nice guy and someone I trust completely. My kids go there too.

Anyway, getting back to the point of this thread - yes, the rumour is true. Full planning application for change of use to dental surgery is pending decision. The application can be viewed online via the Planning Portal at:

Oh no, my family down near manchester will be terribly disappointed - they visit us regularly (having a beach does seem to make a difference to how often people are prepared to visit you from afar, don't you find?!) and one of their highlights, in some weird post-modern ironic kind of way, is Red Giant! Their kids see it as a kind of Aladin's cave, i think, and it's a bit of a family joke now. What will we do without it?

Yeah, who bought all that junk, apart from collectors of 60's kitsch? Not enough people obviously! Yet until fairly recently, we had two such establishments. I've already forgotten what the other shop used to be called but it's the former church at the other end of the High St that's now being turned into flats. Where do people go for their tartan shopping trolleys, glass ornaments and naff lamps nowadays? 'Big W' I suppose.

Still, it used to annoy me intensely that both of these shops sold pocket money-priced replica guns. No responsible trader should sell these things and no responsible parent should allow their children to have them. Oh well, time to log off - I'm starting to rant again!

What has happened to this dental surgery? The Red Giant seems to be running its stock down, but they are still selling the replica guns.

Here's a copy of an email I sent to our local councillors 3 years ago:

I noted this afternoon that the Portobello Gift Centre is giving prominent window display to a BB gun, at sale at a very affordable Ã‚Â£3.99. My wife tells me that they are on sale even cheaper at the Red Giant further along the High Street. You will probably be aware that these are plastic replica hand-guns, designed to fire plastic pellets. A number of unfortunate accidents throughout the UK (including serious eye injuries) has already been documented as the craze has escalated.

Apart from the ethical considerations of children playing with toy guns there are genuine safety concerns with these products. I have already spotted a number of very young children brandishing them in and around Rosefield Park. There is further concern that these guns can easily be mistaken for genuine firearms and police forces have already stated that they will send in armed response teams to deal with any report of this type. (See recent report pasted below) Given their recent "trigger happy" record this is not a situation that we want to encourage.

On behalf of many concerned local parents I would be obliged if you could give this matter your attention. While it may be (unfortunately) perfectly legal to sell these items I would hope that local traders might take a more socially responsible attitude.

I should add that both Lawrence and Maureen were sympathetic to my grievance, but 3 years on these guns are still on sale.

I heard that Peter Lyle and Anne Saxby would be moving the practise to RG, and it would be a bright shiny place with technicians on hand and all sorts of encouraging things. So the last time I was in i asked about it...but it was strenously denied.

You know what's really wierd... In my "Williamsons" gallery the shot of the Red Giant has got the 2nd highest hit count - double the mean... Wierd...

Life is funny that way... The single most popular image on my website, by a huge margin, is of two cows in a field. It's a really boring photograph, but, hey, you can't argue with your public.

I must be a bit of a saddo, because I will genuinely miss the Red Giant. If you don't have a car, lugging ordinary, but awkward household items like pillows, cushions, clothes-horses, linen baskets, brooms, mops, out of town on a bus, is - well - I leave it to your imagination. Mica Hardware did/does not do soft furnishings, and sometimes doesn't do some of the other items I want. I really WILL miss the Red Giant.

Noticed on my way to work this morning that the dental practice on Moira Terrace/Inchkeith Terrace/ Portobello Road etc etc (you know the one I mean, right on the main road) is up for sale - perhaps Saxby and Co are about to get some competition on their doorstep?

Well, I'm glad it's not just me, Poppy! Now they are closing down, (and I have just moved house!) there are barrow-loads of stuff I want to grab, before they go, but sadly I don't have a barrow - or even a shopping trolley!

Sadly, I'm going away tomorrow, not back till Tuesday, and when I enquired last weekend whether RG would still be open NEXT weekend, the gentleman said 'I hope not'! I can't do anything during the week, as I work uptown.

I feel we are really getting to the root of the problem now, I was beginning to think things were starting to go rotten. This is turning into an amalgam of obtuse dental refernces and it is getting more and more difficult to swallow. Do you think you will be able to extract many more without too much pain?
