My friend and I share no love for the old dictatorship (I doubt if many who experienced it do) but what a nasty bit of irony when a system that you think will make things better falls far short of expectations..."He is almost commonly considered as a thief. There are virtually no other people in the world who made billions of $$ in several years, especially people who produced nothing. His and several others' only "merit" is that they were in the "right" place and at the "right" time to arrange "privatization" of oil industry. Abramovitch is considered to have been the Yeltsin's family treasurer that is why it was easy for him to become a billionaire out of nothing. People hate him as he has no desire to invest the easy money in the Russian economy preferring to spend the money on foreign football teams, mansions, jets, yachts... Most of the people here are poor, and they may be right to think that people like Abramovitch have become rich on their account selling natural resources belonging to the whole nation. The worst of all is that Abramovitch is the Governor of one of the Russia's regions, and the Kremlin seems to pay no attention to his defiant behavoiur, the country's authorities do nothing to make the money work for the national economy. This is disgusting."

Roman Abramovitch
I've got this Russian friend who works in Penza (SE of Moscow). In amongst our banter - his family history is fascinating - I happened to ask him if he had heard of Roman Abramovitch, the Chelsea owner. I've got my own opinions about him, but was stunned by the ferocity of the reply I got back. Here it is (FYI my friend is a translator!) :
Re: Roman Abramovitch
There have been quite a few articles and documentaries on RA and he doesn't emerge with flying colours. Even when you look at Chelsea it reminds me of a kid who spent years trying to collect complete Pokemon set and then a rich Uncle one day goes out and buys the lot for him. The kid has the full set but there is no sense of fulfilment or enjoyment. Something isnae quite right aboot that boy.
Whose expectations are we talking about, what were they, have we passed the time limit for expectation fulfilment and if so, who decided?Dadaist wrote: My friend and I share no love for the old dictatorship (I doubt if many who experienced it do) but what a nasty bit of irony when a system that you think will make things better falls far short of expectations...

Think of yourself asking one of Abramovitch's citizens -although I'm sure each has a different opinion and a different answer. Actually, shall we borrow Bob's tape recorder and go on a visit together?Porty wrote:There have been quite a few articles and documentaries on RA and he doesn't emerge with flying colours. Re: Roman Abramovitch
A trip would be nice, we could take Bob, if one of the Citizens refered to RA as a P (and the 3 letters that form Roland Rat's surname) Bob could sentence then to 10 Years hard labour. Man, it would be just like the old days.Dadaist wrote:Think of yourself asking one of Abramovitch's citizens -although I'm sure each has a different opinion and a different answer. Was a documentary on him on channel 5 about 1-2 months ago. Lot of it was a rep from his aluminium firm saying how he couldn't comment on things.
Does seem to have been in the right place at the right time with an "interesting" attitude to other people. and from this documentary the people in siberia (where he's governer and runs his businesses from) either seemed to love him or hate him
the marmite of football owners then
