Wedding Readings...

Post by wangi » 28 Jul 2005, 21:15

... Well mrstb wangi and my good self have been going slowly crazy over the past week or so trying to come up with the 2nd reading for our civil ceremony. I had the fantastic idea of using song lyrics...

...Why are all/most songs totally inappropriate!

I don't suppose anyone has any ideas?

I started off with the lofty idea of a song we both like, one we own... And then opened that out ones from Scottish(ish) bands (no, not the tartan type) that we and then just to to ones we own... Now, well I'll like any song ;)

The sister and brother in-law were "kind" enough to get us a URL for our engagement (shudders): http://jennyandlee.co.uk/

"Jenny kissed me when we met,
Jumping from the chair she sat in.
Time, you thief! who love to get
Sweets into your list, put that in.
Say I'm weary, say I'm sad;
Say that health and wealth have missed me;
Say I'm growing old, but add-
Jenny kissed me! "

Evergreen.

Sorry, tried to type that without sniggering but failed.

Or how about this?

Jenny kiss'd me when we met,
Jumping from the chair she sat in;
Time, you thief, who love to get
Sweets into your list, put that in!
Say i'm weary, say I'm sad,
Say that health and wealth have miss'd me,
Say I'm growing old, but add,
Jenny kiss'd me.

Maybe not - too much ill health and old age.

I shall think more seriously about your request  .

What's the opposite of retrospective? This is something that Lee could say is what he'll say in years to come??

But, like you B, this is a challenge - I don't expect the bridal pair to accept my suggestions. but the fun of exploring pomes on the net and in books is fun!

Or, whilst conveying to the guests the night they first met, Lee could quote Burns: -

The Cotter's Saturday Night

"But hark! a rap comes gently to the door;
Jenny, wha kens the meaning o' the same,
Tells how a neibor lad comes o'er the moor
To do some errands and convey her name"

Or one for the Best Man perhaps:

That hackney'd judge of human life,
The Preacher and the King,
Observes: - "The man that gets a wife,
He gets a noble thing".
But how capricious are mankind,
Now loahitng, now desirous!
We married men, how oft we find
The best of things will tire us!

Or maybe not.........

Fuck Tha Police Lyrics

Right about now, NWA court is in full effect.
Judge Dre presiding in the case of NWA versus the police department.
Prosecuting attourneys are MC Ren, Ice Cube, and Eazy muthafuckin E.
Order, order, order. Ice Cube, take the muthafuckin stand.
Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth
And nothin but the truth so help your black ass?
(You're goddamn right!)
Why don't you tell everybody what the fuck you gotta say?

Fuck tha police
Comin straight from the underground
Young nigga got it bad cuz I'm brown
And not the other color so police think
They have the authority to kill a minority

Fuck that shit, cuz I ain't tha one
For a punk muthafucka with a badge and a gun
To be beatin on, and throwin in jail
We could go toe to toe in the middle of a cell

Fuckin with me cuz I'm a teenager
With a little bit of gold and a pager
Searchin my car, lookin for the product
Thinkin every nigga is sellin narcotics

You'd rather see me in the pen
Then me and Lorenzo rollin in the Benzo
Beat tha police outta shape
And when I'm finished, bring the yellow tape
To tape off the scene of the slaughter
Still can't swallow bread and water

I don't know if they fags or what
Search a nigga down and grabbin his nuts
And on the other hand, without a gun they can't get none
But don't let it be a black and a white one
Cuz they slam ya down to the street top
Black police showin out for the white cop

Ice Cube will swarm
On any muthafucka in a blue uniform
Just cuz I'm from the CPT, punk police are afraid of me
A young nigga on a warpath
And when I'm finished, it's gonna be a bloodbath
Of cops, dyin in LA
Yo Dre, I got somethin to say

Fuck the police [4x]

(Example of scene one:
(Pull your goddamn ass over right now.)
(Ah shit, what the fuck you pullin me over for?)
(Cuz I feel like it. Just sit your ass on the curb and shut the fuck up.)
(Man, fuck this shit.)
(Alright smartass, I'm takin' your black ass to jail.)
M. C. Ren, will you please give your testimony to the jury about this fucked up
Incident.)

Fuck tha police and Ren said it with authority
Because the niggaz on the street is a majority.
A gang, is with whoever I'm stepping
And the motherfuckin' weapon
Is kept in a stash box, for the so-called law
Wishin' Ren was a nigga that they never saw

Lights start flashin behind me
But they're scared of a nigga so they mace me to blind me
But that shit don't work, I just laugh
Because it gives em a hint not to step in my path

To the police I'm sayin fuck you punk
Readin my rights and shit, it's all junk
Pullin out a silly club, so you stand
With a fake assed badge and a gun in your hand

But take off the gun so you can see what's up
And we'll go at it punk, I'ma fuck you up

Make ya think I'm a kick your ass
But drop your gat, and Ren's gonna blast
I'm sneaky as fuck when it comes to crime
But I'm a smoke em now, and not next time

Smoke any muthafucka that sweats me
Or any assho that threatens me
I'm a sniper with a hell of a scope
Takin out a cop or two, they can't cope with me

The muthafuckin villian that's mad
With potential to get bad as fuck
So I'm a turn it around
Put in my clip, yo, and this is the sound
Ya, somethin like that, but it all depends on the size of the gat

Takin out a police would make my day
But a nigga like Ren don't give a fuck to say

Fuck the police [4x]

(Yo, man, what you need?
Police, open now. We have a warrant for Eazy-E's arrest.
Get down and put your hands up where I can see em.
Just shut the fuck up and get your muthafuckin ass on the floor.
[huh?])

(Yo Eazy-E, why don't you step up to the stand
And tell the jury how you feel abou this bullshit.)

I'm tired of the muthafuckin jackin
Sweatin my gang while I'm chillin in the shackin
Shining tha light in my face, and for what
Maybe it's because I kick so much butt

I kick ass, or maybe cuz I blast
On a stupid assed nigga when I'm playin with the trigga
Of any Uzi or an AK
Cuz the police always got somethin stupid to say

They put up my picture with silence
Cuz my identity by itself causes violence
The E with the criminal behavior
Yeah, I'm a gansta, but still I got flavor

Without a gun and a badge, what do ya got?
A sucka in a uniform waitin to get shot,
By me, or another nigga.
And with a gat it don't matter if he's smarter or bigger
[MC Ren: Size don't mean shit, he's from the old school, fool]

And as you all know, E's here to rule
Whenever I'm rollin, keep lookin in the mirror
And there's no cue, yo, so I can hear a
Dumb muthafucka with a gun

And if I'm rollin off the 8, he'll be tha one
That I take out, and then get away
And while I'm drivin off laughin
This is what I'll say

Fuck the police [4x]

(The verdict.
The jury has found you guilty of bein a redneck,
Whitebread, chickenshit muthafucka.
Wait, that's a lie. That's a goddamn lie.
I want justice! I want justice!
Fuck you, you black muthafucka!)

Fuck the police [3x]

The best best man one I've heard was at the wedding of a footballer:

"XXX tonight's the night
We really hope you score
Just push your centre forward
And listen for the roar!"

This is rather lovely:

Some say love, it is the river,
That drowns the tender reed.
Some say love, it is the razor,
That leads your soul to bleed. .
Some say love, it is the hunger,
An endless aching need. .
I say love, it is the flower,
And you its only seed.

It's the heart afraid of breaking,
That never learns to dance.
It's the dream afraid of waking,
That never takes the chance.
It's the one who won't be taken,
Who cannot see to give.
And the soul afraid of dying,
That never learns to live.

When the night has been too lonely,
And the road has been too long
And you think that love is only,
For the lucky, and the strong
Just remember in the winter,
Far beneath the winter snows
Lies the seed that with the sunshine,
In the spring becomes the rose.

To My Bride - Steven Reiser

To my bride, I give you my heart
Sharing love each day, from the very start
To my bride, I give you my kiss
Filling each day with joy and bliss
To my bride, I give you my being
To love, to play, to work and to sing
To my bride, I give you my mind
Learning each day to be more kind
To my bride, I give you my soul
Growing together to be more whole
To my bride, I give you my life
Rejoicing each day that you are my wife

Blessing of the Apaches - Anon

Now you will feel no rain, for each of you will be shelter for the other.
Now you will feel no cold, for each of you will be warmth to the other.
Now there will be no loneliness, for each of you will be companion to the other.
Now you are two persons, but there is only one life before you.
May beauty surround you both in the journey ahead and through all the years.
May happiness be your companion and your days together be good and long upon the earth.

Catullus

Thow open the door; come forth, oh bride.
See how the wedding-torches shake
Their heads, their fiery tresses flying free
To welcome you.
A shy young bride, half bashful,
Half excited; she hesitates
Until love's calling draws her on,
Melting in tears,
No tears today! No girl on earth
So beautiful; no girl will see
A fairer wedding-day than this
Dawn in the east.
The day is waiting.
Come forward, sweet, and hear our song;
Our torches dip their golden heads
To welcome you. This day is yours-

The Art of Marriage (Author Unknown)

The little things are the big things.
It is never being too old to hold hands.
It is remembering to say "I love you" at least once a day.

It is never going to sleep angry.
It is at no time taking the other for granted;
the courtship should not end with the honeymoon,
it should continue through all the years.

It is having a mutual sense of values and common objectives.
It is standing together facing the world.
It is forming a circle of love that gathers in the whole family.
It is doing things for each other, not in the attitude of duty or sacrifice,
but in the spirit of joy.

It is speaking words of appreciation and demonstrating
gratitude in thoughtful ways.
It is not expecting the husband to wear a halo
or the wife to have wings of an angel.
It is not looking for perfection in each other.

It is cultivating flexibility, patience, understanding and a sense of humor.
It is having the capacity to forgive and forget.
It is giving each other an atmosphere in which each can grow.

It is finding room for the things of the spirit.
It is a common search for the good and the beautiful.
It is establishing a relationship in which the independence is equal,
dependence is mutual and the obligation is reciprocal.
It is not only marrying the right partner, it is being the right partner.

Wangi sorry about the overkill - all from a "book for the bride" :D

Thanks everyone, I'll look into all the suggestions later on tonight.

Sandra, I was the best man at a friends wedding last month - he had the Apache one (the complete long version) read out, and the minister done the Art of Marriage... So that two are off the list ;)
