The Wrong Mrs Whittaker

Post by Carol » 18 Jan 2004, 13:56

Last Thursday my friend received a letter from a man who is researching the Codona Fairground Family.

He explains that he is trying to trace any information about a Mr and Mrs Whittaker who were living in Portobello in the early 1900's. They were at one point involved with the Codona Fairground Family, helping them with plays that they put on in the Tower Amusements on the Promenade.

The letter was sent to Mrs Cathy Whittaker who lives on the Prom at the foot of Bath Street. Cathy has lived in Portobello since she got married in the late 1930's and can confirm that this is not her family.

The 1881 Census shows a Whittaker family living at 10 Tower Street. Thomas Whittaker aged 48. His wife Rosa (46). Eight children: Robert 24, Thomas 21, Ellen 18, Margaret 15, Francis 14, William 12, Oliver 6 and Jane 2.

A family history index giving limited information shows a William Ingham Whittaker married Hilda Guilhermina Melville on 22nd September 1903 at Edinburgh, Midlothian. It also says William died on 10th July 1936.

I wondered if anyone knew anymore and if there were any living descendants.

My Nan knew Cathy Whittaker from the Prom.
I saw her a few years ago when she introduced herself to me. I didn't recognise her but she knew me after all these years!
