The Tower

Post by Lizzie » 26 Jan 2004, 16:40

On taking a stroll along the promenade on Sunday afternoon, I noticed the derelict part of the Tower behind the amusements now has scaffolding erected on it.
I did hear a rumour a while back that there was a possibility of it being renovated and turned into a museum. Does anyone know anything about what is happening there? I would be interested to find out.

The Tower

Several groups in Portobello did try to set up a pottery museum in Portobello many years back and the Tower was suggested as a possible site but the idea had to be abandoned as no funding could be secured for the project.

As far as I understand it, the owner of the Tower has been granted planning permission to divide both the Victorian house and the attached Tower into 2 flats, part of the tower going with each flat. He has also been granted a Lothian District Council Grant to restore the Tower - repairs to brickwork, stonework and to replace the windows - and this is why the scaffolding is up at present.

Thanks for that info John, it'll be good to see the Tower restored, its been such an eyesore over the years! I wonder how much the two flats will go on the market for, if they are to be sold?

The link below will take you to the house price search part of the land registry of scotland site. If you add the first part of your postcode ie EH15 1 - this will display all the properties in the area (using your whole postcode limits you to your street). Service costs £4.70 payable online with debit/credit card. I like this new system because it displays the addresses first - if the address you're looking for isn't there it doesn't cost you anything.
