I've seen these panels, and I also applauded the thought behind them.

They are on the south facing (ie back) side of the house and certainly don't look offensive to me.

And what do they mean about the precedent being set? This is exactly the precedent that should be being set every where!

I had heard that grants for this type of thing were being reduced / phased out anyway? And I have my eye on one of these (which allegedly also don't need planning approval...)

Costs about Â£1000 at present but they are working on getting some grant approvals that I hope will bring this down to about Â£500 plus 5% VAT

It's scandalous that the Council take such a stance as Mr. M says this kind of home improvement should be actively encouraged.

A window for goodness sake! Then they happily rubber stamp all sorts round the corner on the Prom in the face of considerably more than just one paltry objection.

Don't get me started on the Council's window policy

I thought somebody in Brunstane Road (left hand side on the way up) had solar panels on the front of their roof - they've been there for years. Anyway, Elizabeth, if you're reading this - fight them all the way - there's a very sensible man works for the Scottish Executive.......

Sorry, yes, em, I meant a solar panel would look kind of similar in size and position to say, a velux window.

No, just sitting up too late of an evening and then getting up for work at 5.45am.

Had a look at the panels on the way back from the pool just now. I'd imagined they might be set into the roof but they are kind of propped up atop and at an angle.

Still can't imagine why anyone would find them objectionable though. They are to the rear and only face the gable of a neighbouring property on Pittville Street.

I have heard that the panels may be allowed to remain if they can be fitted to be more flush with the roof, and therefore less obtrusive. Would they still be as efficient though?

All these "plug 'n' play" home generators are subject to regulations and requirements for safety. not all of the manufacturers make you waware of what your duties as installer / operator are!

Confirmation of the Council's stance from Maureen Child:

The Planning Committee and Department are very supportive of renewable energy and it can be located sensitively in conservation areas like Portobello. We would only refuse if it is really 'in your face'. In the case of the one in Elcho Terrace, we have asked for a relatively minor adjustment to the elevation. That's all.
