Radio Free Porty - new forum & committee ?
Radio Free Porty - new forum & committee ?
This is just a proposal, but I think this discussion should start and be public.
I would like to propose that we have a new forum, to be hosted under the wing of POL, for Radio Free Porty management and organization, plus anmy tech discussions etc. I've had 80 PMs this month!!!!
This would solve a multitude of problems, make things so much easier for me (heh) and generally be a nice experiment in collective decision making.
For starters, people who haven't been mods before could be made mods for that forum - like ali and jackson for example. This would mean they could pin topics and make announcements on that forum.
Next up is the division of tasks. I hate money and would like somebody else to be the treasurer and do fundraising so I would see this as a job wanting doing. Ali? Ecm?
One DJ, one vote? If anything, we could resolve any issues like who gets to play live when and whether we should give this or that DJ a slot by poll, or at least objections could be made open and public.
The way forward I see is this :
1. create a Radio Free Porty forum with some of our DJs as mods
2. decisions like special events, fundraising, etc will be made openly on that forum
3. job divisions be defined with each postholder being part of the "management committee" for the station :
Bob - publicity and field recording (as well as being a DJ)
Dada - station engineer & website (as well as DJ)
a.n. other #1 - treasurer, pay the streaming bills, fundraiser
Like I said this is just a proposal, but I would like to set the ball rolling.

"Thorn in my side" - geddit.
Jackson, I have a specific job for you and that is search engine submission.
This means adding www.radiofreeporty.org to the world's search engines.
I will handle the site-side stuff like the META data tags, but would like somebody to do the work of finding the various search engines and also internet radio site listings, and adding us, then reporting back.
There are software tools which can help in this task, but essentially it requires a lot of surfing. Interested?
Between us, Ali and I know nothing about treasury/fundraising but we're willing to give it a bash if there's no-one else who'd be keen or has some experience to bring to bear.Dadaist wrote:How about you and ali fight over who gets to be treasurer / fundraiser.ecm wrote:Excellent idea, Dada. Count me in to help in any way I can with this.
Or maybe you can jobshare I dunno.

So tell me when you've got your meta-wotsits sorted out (and tell me what the words you are using are please), and I'll start.

Ah. Surfing the internet. That is one of my "talents". Yes, I should be able to do that I think. I've just had a brief tuition session from Geek At Work, so I can share some very Geeky information with you. But don't worry: I won't.There are software tools which can help in this task, but essentially it requires a lot of surfing. Interested?

I dont mind being treasurer but I want to be a DJ as well
Im going to have a love themed show and be a sort of Gordon Brown/Lionel Ritchie type charcater. What would that be like?
Dont mind doing a bit of fundraising either. Will ths station be entirely internet based? Will be expected to make a seamless transition from radio to TV in a few months time?

Everybody gets a DJ slot. You're now the treasurer. DJ Brown Lionel? DJ Rich Gordon?Porty wrote:I dont mind being treasurer but I want to be a DJ as wellIm going to have a love themed show and be a sort of Gordon Brown/Lionel Ritchie type charcater. What would that be like?

I think we shall stay internet based for the time being. You can stream live video as easily as audio. Windows media and nullsoft both support this - it's off the shelf technology. But let's walk first.
Excellent. Do you want to wait until tonight so I can do the meta tags, I'll PM you once I've done it?Ed wrote:I have a tool that does this that I use for my clients sites and their submissions. Jackson - this doesn't let you off the hook. You still have to leg it round the internet radio sites.
All right, now that ecm and I are off the hook vis a vis the money thing - phew!!!! - can we be the general purposes committee musical quality control and monitoring censorship audition guys??
And whilst I am well known for being a miserable party-pooper, happy to rain on anyone's parade, and you have to believe me when I say that I take no pleasure in this, has anybody considered how we get round/address the little matter of the PRS???

Why do we need to monitor musical quality, or censor who gets to broadcast? I would say the criteria was audio within the listenable human range.ali wrote:All right, now that ecm and I are off the hook vis a vis the money thing - phew!!!! - can we be the general purposes committee musical quality control and monitoring censorship audition guys??

Also, there are thousands of internet radio stations. Why not just base our server in another country? Stuff the PRS and stuff copyright. What if I play a concert bootleg? Or music I cut up myself? Or music from a dead record label?
It just happens that our server is in the uk. If you gave me 24 hours I could move it to Iran. It's the internet. Ain't no borders.

Porty, when I get home I will hand over the financial reins to you and report exactly what has been paid out (about 50 quid) what has been received (30 quid) and what has been pledged (which i have in a sophisticated "text" file, using the financial management package "Notepad")Porty wrote:Do I get an all expenses paid trip to check out the location of the new server?![]()
How much money do we have/owe?
