The Statue Of Pan

As I do my daily exercise of 2 gentle laps around the cakestand-shaped thingy at the bottom of Marlborough Street, I often wonder about the origin of its adjacent statue, The Statue Of Pan (that's what I call it anyway).

Truly it is a sculpture of great mystery, and in its ancient curves I sense deep wisdom and a serenity unbeholden to man. But from where and when did it come? Is it a Michelangelo? Is it a Henry Moore? Is it a... er - sorry - can't think of any other sculptors.

As you can see, I haven't a flipping clue. Can anybody please enlighten me?

It used to be a water fountain - more than that I don't know but I do think it should be restored. Let's apply for a lottery grant

Thanks Epykat. A fountain, eh? The Fountain Of Pan, then. What a shame that no-one had the foresight to move it to the new garden where the paddling pool was. It could have formed a magnificent centrepiece to it, amazing residents and tourists alike.

I totally agree, instead it'll stand there until it's eroded away by the sea water and urine from the kids who use it as a loo in the summer (seen it with my own eyes!)

This is no good at all. I think I'm going to have to send some strongly worded tittle-tattle to Councillor Lawrence Marshall and see if he might get something done about it.

Wouldn't bother. Before you know it, it would be demolished and a block of flats built in its place.......

Am I just dreaming or did that work at one point? like late 80s early 90s?
