Are there any Clarsach players in Porty? Failing that, does anyone have a Clarsach that they don't play?

Was going to ask the same myself, but thought it might be one of those "oh, everyone knows what a CLARSACH is!" things...

I'm English and I know. So there.

It's a type of harp and I know of one girl who plays it. She used to live in Pittville Street but not sure if she's still there.

The clarsach is also known as the Celtic harp. You can buy them at Varstiy Music on the Bridges. For a great inroduction - hunt out Alan Stivell's Renaissance of the Celtic Harp on CD.

I've always quite fancied playing a harp. We could set up the POL Clarsach Ensemble and play on the beach on a Sunday afternoon

Fantastic image! We've already got the beach so all I need now is the clarsach..
There must be some unloved and abandoned clarsachs lying around Porty?

Sadly, I wouldn't think so - they are rather expensive and a niche market. Plus, as they have brass strings, they are quite hard to play. You might have more luck appealing to an Irish or Breton folk music society.

There are a few folk in Porty that play them, I'm sure there's 4 or 5 ladies/girls I know that play.

Best place to buy a clarsach is the International Harp Festival, held in Edinburgh in April (next one is 6-12 April). Otherwise you could hire one from the Clarsach Society for approx £25 per month.

I happen to know of a porty clarsach which might be for sale. If interested, contact me at the Ever Green.
