system restore

Post by Bob Jefferson » 09 Oct 2005, 21:18

Some of you may recall that I bought a new computer a few months ago and the resulting hand me down process meant that both kids now had their own computer. I had managed to connect 2 machines to the wireless network, but the third obstinately refused to play.

Today, I decided to get it sorted. I connected it up to via the network cable to run some diagnostic software and...it failed to connect to the internet. Eventually, I gave up and phoned the Telewest helpline. They refused to help since it was connected via a router, but offered me a number for a £1 a minute service. I declined and bypassed the router. My helper suggested lots of things to try. It still didn't work.

Much, much later, by which point I have had several attempts to reinstall the adaptor card, update drivers etc, I suddenly remembered the System Restore facility. I rolled it back to May, re-booted and ta-ra - it works! Still don't know what the problem was, but who cares?

Now why didn't the 'helpline' suggest that it in the first place? Grrrr!

As a helpline guy I can tell you why they didn't suggest it as the first thing. System restore puts your machine back to how it was on the particular day. Quite often this can mean certain system files aren't copied back on correctly so your system won't boot, your own personal files can be overwritten and things can all go wrong in a very bad way.

It's a very nice tool as a last resort but will rarely be used as a quick fix by computer people. It can be more hasstle than it's worth IMHO...

Restore

System Restore is very good. The only problem I have with it are these:

It WILL slow your machine down - running as a resource, service.

If you've had viruses / malware prior to running it - it will restore the viruses and malware.

Aside from that, it's a very usefull tool.
Best to run a image of your hard disk (when you are totally happy), then burn the archived image to a CD/RW DVD/RW etc.

Norton Ghost is the best for that.

Sorry didn't think you'd be writing it up - thought you'd be off playing with your printers.
