Police Raid at Duddingston Crossroads

Had an eye witness account of a police swoop on a house in Duddingston Mill this morning. Mrs Porty said it was frightening. Tens of police in riot style gear and some officers that looked liked thugs.

More than 20 properties were targeted in a series of dawn raids by police in east Edinburgh.

The Lothian and Borders force said it had been focussing on a network of criminals who were "making residents' lives a misery".

More than 170 officers were involved in the raids in the Leith, Craigmillar and Portobello areas.

Six people were arrested on warrants and four others were detained under the Misuse of Drugs Act.

Police said they had recovered a "substantial amount" of stolen property, Â£6,000 in cash and a firearm.

Ch Insp Donnie MacKinnon said: "Our officers went out there this morning to give a clear message to the community that we are not prepared to tolerate the criminal behaviour that damages these neighbourhoods.

Hopefully that story won't incite our young readers to resort to crime. Â£6000 is a lot.

The Evening News refers to raids on properties in Bath Street and Mount Lodge Place.

Police out in force (pardon the pun) in Mount Lodge right now. Leafleting all the doors urging people to phone with any further info.

Absolutely no need to do so and if the report was attempting to be objective it should have been subbed out. Cynically, perhaps it was to reassure Scotsman/EEN readers that their property prices will be safe, or somesuch nonsense.

From the school of journalism that always refers to women as either mums or grannies; and where a person's colour or race (other than white-British) is only of interest if attached to a crime when it somehow becomes an important fact. In most cases, it is not.
