I then reject things that I used to think were really good but I would never listen to now- Stairway to Heaven, Rory Gallacher, Eric Clapton, Puff the Magic Dragon, Sparky's Magic Piano etc

I think I am on about 80. Nice project for a chilly autumnal evening to get them down to 11. Are we talking singles or tracks?

A couple of mine aren't singles. Electronic music doesn't do 7"s very often (although it does do 12" a lot!!) and ambient music doesn't do singles at all, just the occasional ep.

There are about 3 on my list which were never non-album tracks - sorry, I have stretched the boundaries of the list.

This is as good as radio free porty. Getting lots of ideas of things I haven't listened to for ages.

There's a difference I feel between "a single" and a track taken from an album released as a single. There is something about a single that has a beginning, middle and an end and satisfies in its own right. The Buzzcocks, for example, were/are a singles band. People like Dylan, Neil Young are probably album people. Pompous and pedantic? Me? On no.

Ah, the Boothill Foot Tappers! I used to have that single as well, and occasionally search for it on ebay, but after paying a hefty fee for the 7" of Freight Train by Helen & The Horns recently, and it not being quite as good as I remember it (rubbish in fact), I'm a bit wary about such fake country purchases. Lash Lariat & The Long Riders still sound good though.

Not sure if you aware, but I am secretary of the Marlborough Street branch of the TV Personalities fan club (current membership:1). I'll drop an application form in to you.

JP - Surely you know that the ONLY version of "Freight Train" is the one by Chas McDevitt and Nancy Whiskey, which would be a great record even if it didn't feature some fine whistling in a Roger Whittaker stylee. One of my favourites and one of the first songs I remember coming from my mum's old radiogram when I was a toddler - that and Perry Como's "Magic Moments" and that Sinatra one about the rubber treeplant.

Think it must be a different song Ali - this one's by Helen McCookerybook (she being the one who put the Helen in Helen & The Horns). It goes, "Waiting at the station for the freight train to come by, never thought that I'd be here oh no sireee blah blah blah."
