My five year old daughter knows there is no such man as Santa Claus. I haven't told her there isn't but she just knows.

It's quite excruciating watching her father trying to keep up this facade telling her about elves n stuff when all she does is give me side-long glances and says to him "I don't get it."

I'va actually come to think that this idea was invented for a consumerist society in which we need to breed dis-trust of parents into our children. I mean, come on, kids know when you are lying.

Should be Dummy & Maddy instead of...

All I can say is that it is a magical time in my house and it is most certainly not driven by consumerism.

I think the jolly red coated figure was the creation of a Coca Cola campaign, in the thirties in the US. (not sure of the details) The name comes from an alteration of Saint Nicholas

The jolly( he's not really!) rotund, bearded one could be Mr Arachnid, cos he goes to the children's party at the Fire Station every year dressed up in a red suit with a fur trim and this big white beard!!!!
