hawkers, traders, salesmen and evangelists

Post by Dadaist » 06 Jan 2006, 13:36

This thread encompasses reviews (quality of sales pitch, dress, politeness) of door-to-door, phone and street approaches of those who would like to introduce something new into our lives (be it qualitative or quantitative) in return for our money, souls, time or whatever.

This could be anything from mobile phone contracts to double glazing to membership of a religious or political organisation - also, market research whether "real" or just a pitch for one of the above products.

What are your experiences? I have several stories to tell, including my experience today with the Mormons (couldn't be bothered typing the longer name of their club).

Don't worry, I'm not trying to sell you something ......

Before I forget, my other questions were :

1. These people you see on the high street with enormous "suitcase" bags - you know the ones, they are always in suits - what's in the bags? They only seem to go into shops.

2. Ever worked in one of these "jobs" - like telesales for example? If so, tell us your experience.

(This thread is also for fans of the harshest of all "sales" movies - Glengarry Glen Ross)

The Big Bag guys are usually selling toys and novelties.

One got into our office once but the ever vigilant Poppy contacted the senior "security" officer who escorted him off the premises!!! He'd got to the 4th floor ---- without a pass. No wonder senior management lose their mobiles and laptops on a seemingly regular basis!! :D

You reckon they are opportunistic thieves too? Gosh.

So - are they trying to sell individual toys to people, or a box of them to a shop? And is the stuff just samples or the whole lot - say a shop decided to stock the stuff, do these people continue to supply them?

Also, how are they paid? Are they 100% commission? If so, I can understand why they would want to nick your laptop if you didn't buy a water pistol.

Sorry, was not trying to imply they are thieves as well! But they are opportunistic at getting in places by coming into a building in a crowd of staff thus avoiding showing a pass* - just after our episode the same thing happened at another department which was in the paper. It may have happened after 9/11 when security was a big issue.

But sorry I canot answer your other questions  as he was removed before he had much chance at a sales pitch!!

* so that may be how the real thieves got in to nick the other stuff.

PS Did you drive your parents mental as a child by doing the Why Why Why Why Why thing the the nth degree!! :D

I worked on the 2nd floor of a intercom protected office one behind a security code door on our level and one of these dudes with the big bags got in. Who knows how. He came over to my desk where I was working and said "hi, do you want to buy a watch?" I just said, "erm, no thanks " and he went round and tried everyone else before leaving with no sales.

Weird - I only thought they were selling samples to businesses.

Now then, it's ok. You just have to be the good girl and it will all be ok.

Maybe this is a new sales technique people should try - if someone refuses to buy (say) double glazing, you just pout and cry at them.

Bath Street Religion

Post by rapunzell » 06 Jan 2006, 17:32

The American Evangelists on Bath St had the fine street approach of being friendly and then revealing - in a friendly way - that the Church of Scotland wasn't a proper religion and their followers would be going to hell because they had no souls. The day they waylaid my friend and I, they explained that it wasn't our fault for being Scottish, we obviously didn't know any better, and all we had to do was take the proper version of the bible - the American version of the bible - and we'd be forgiven for being Church of Scotland. Otherwise we were clearly going to go to hell.

I'd only gone out to sit on the beach and have an icecream : (

I remember going for a "personality test" at the Scientology place that used to be up on the South Bridge. This was sometime in the mid-seventies.
My friend and I were accosted in the street outside by a young guy and within minutes found ourselves sitting in a room covered in posters of Big L. Ron holding what looked like empty, cleaned soup cans in each hand.

Nice young bloke handed us over to even nicer bloke who then asked us a series of questions. Can't remember now what they were.
The cans were attached to some machine which apparently picked up our vibrations or something. They were probably just finger-printing us. Ha ha.

Needless to say, our personalities were found lacking with the only hope of filling in the missing chunks being to sign up immediately for some course or other or, at very least, to buy a book or two.

I seem to recall we spent our money over the road in what used to be the Yellow Carvel instead and getting a row from my brother for being so gullible.

I was "accosted" by (probably the same) guy about 5 years ago on South Bridge too. Was asked a few questions which seemed harmless enough and started to get some interest from me but then, just happened, to lead to him suggesting I should go inside for a "personality test"....at which point I looked up at the sign outside the stair and decided to emulate a Harp advert of a few years ago.

Me too! Also got caught up in the worst fight ever in there. Glass and blood flying everywhere - don't think we went back much after that.
Enough of your nonsense - get back to the Play Pen!
