Hogmanay

It was with great joy that I took part in the first gathering for the ringing of the clock bell at midnight on Hogmanay. On my way there I was expecting to find around a dozen people, but Portobello word-of-mouth was as successful as ever, and there was at least a hundred gathered!

I was rather flattered as well to see everyone gathered outside the deli!

All thanks to Bob Jefferson who came up with the idea and crawled into the clock space to make it happen. I would like to think that this coming Hogmanay (it will be here before you know it!) we could make it more of an event, with some music, food etc. At the deli we had planned to do some free nibbles and mulled wine, but as we were unsure of the expected turnout, did not do this in the end.

This Hogmanay, if the bell ringing happens again, I would like to start the ball rolling now and say that Kitcheners Deli will do what we were going to this year.

Graham, that's a very generous offer and one we will be happy to hold you to. I had no idea either how many were going to turn up so it was a great relief to see so many people there. It was a really nice friendly atmosphere and something we can definitely build upon next year.

I think it says it all really that about 100 people turned up when every one of them must have wondered if they would be the only ones. Now that people realise they won't be, next year could be the start of something........

It was really brilliant how many people turned up though many of us didn't know the words to auld lang syne

I for one, always follow someone who knows them and there was a bit of a lull in the middle. But great welcome to 2006!
