Simply put - we're just not busy enough.
It's all to do with the number of active topics displayed on the page - if it was the case that more than half the page was taken up with topics on one thing then maybe there would be a case for it, but this was a mistake as it means that essentially Bob has killed off discussion on (so far) music and politics because people won't bother going to three forums.
Until we get so busy that important topics like the supermarket are being shunted to page 2 by other more flippant topics - which they aren't right now - we should re-integrate music and politics to keep the main board from stagnating. Topics can also be pinned - it would maybe be more useful to pin the supermarket topic instead of one about libellous posts.
Bob/administrator need to learn that a healthy forum's topics bleed into each other somewhat, and that its members have a variety of interests. If they are wanting to encourage people to post, then they shouldn't put obstacles in their way - if I came to the forum and found that my new topic had been shunted to another forum I'd be a bit peeved!!

Gentlemen, I think you will find that events have overtaken you. The Politics forum is gone. The Music forum was started at the request of a registered member. News of this forum has been circulated to a lot of people in the music community in the area, so I would like to monitor it for a while to see if it is successful.
As far as I'm concerned all topics are of equal merit. The ones that rise to the top are the ones that people want to discuss. It would be wrong to favour one thread over another. However, with the board now spread over three pages we might start to delete posts that haven't been replied to for a long time.
The announcements are only left on the board for as long as I consider them relevant. I want to make sure everyone gets the message about libellous postings before I remove it.
On the whole I agree that the board isn't big or busy enough to merit breaking it up and I appreciate your input in this matter.

As the person who suggested the idea of a separate music forum I guess its up to me to defend it.
To be honest Surrealist, I hadn't considered that some people might think it too much of an effort to come in and out of different forums. At an average of 4 - 6 new posts a day to the forum overall I don't think its a huge task to keep up with things as they are.
I'm very much of the opinion that if you build it, then they will come
If it hasn't taken off in a few weeks then re-integrate it with the main board. Meanwhile, I think its worth a try.

Hmmm... it hasn't really taken off, has it? I love talking music, but if you look at the number of page views on the posts on the music page, it's clear that people aren't really hooked by it.

Alex - I have to agree. I'm disappointed because I had hoped that local musicians would use it to advertise gigs and promote their music. An invitation to do so was supposed to be circulated via the POD email distribution list but I'm not sure if this happened or not.
I'm also disappointed that a recent invitation to Community Council and PAS members to participate in the forum has not been taken up. I suspected that some may have been put off by the public nature of the discussion and offered as an alternative a 'by invitation only' closed forum but I have had no takers. This is unfortunate because most of the people concerned are very knowledgeable about local matters and their input would add value to the forum and enhance the level of debate. I think we have to remember that this is still a relatively new form of communication. Not everyone is ready for it yet and perhaps some never will.
I'll get round to re-incorporating the music topics over the next day or two.
