News for cyclists re road safety improvements

There is probably a thread already but anyway ... this is relevant to local and not so local cyclists.

The news follows a Scottish Executive report which highlighted that every injury on Scotland's roads costs an average of £78,000, with expenses including functions such as those of the police, ambulance and fire crews and clearing up afterwards

I'm still hoping that the insurance settlement after my last year's bump will exceed that sum.









But it's only a small hope.

Reads like my daily cycle route...

Cycle lanes to be painted red on Portobello Rd... Hmm, what cycle lanes? And anyway what's the point if they're just advisory and full of parked cars?

Craigentinny Avenue isn't really a surprise as an accident black spot - cyclists turning right onto it from Portobello Road have real trouble getting across the lanes and into the middle of the road due to the speed motorists can be at on this stretch. And they you've also got cars being nudged toward the middle of the road by busses at the bus stop.

A real problem with Portobello Road is visibility at the junctions; cars are parked right to the corners causing trouble for cars coming out to see if it's safe to exit. And when they do they totally underestimate the speed a cyclist can be going at... Add to that folk overtaking at the traffic islands, and...

I used to turn off London Rd at Hillside Cres which is now to get anti-skid paint. I stopped when they removed the traffic island and remodelled the road to have a speed bump at the junction. This bump aint fun when it's wet! Plus you've got the same problem as at Craigentinny Av with getting up to speed to get into the middle of the road. I now only use that junction east bound and on the way in turn down Brunton Ter instead.
