Bob,
From Dr. Feelgood to root vegetables in one post - classic!
I hadn't thought about (or listened to) the Feelgoods in ages but there's a piece about Lee Brilleaux and the band in the current issue of Uncut which I read just the other day and now you mention them too.
They were possibly the first band I ever saw live (things get hazy when I go back further than 25 years ago) and they were amazing. I too like Costello and saw him at the Corn Exchange a year or so ago and that was excellent.
I don't get to too many gigs these days but still listen to loads of music and have found some great stuff more recently. Isn't there anything that's really grabbed you over the last decade or so?
I can't take to acts like Katie Meluha, Dido etc but I can appreciate why they're so popular.
On the male front, imho it's hard to find anything that comes close to Rufus Wainwright just now. His latest album is superb and Ali and I are looking forward to seeing him (and his mum, auntie and little sister Martha) in Glasgow at the end of May. They're playing at the Royal Concert Hall there.
Glenn Tilbrook (ex-Squeeze) is playing the Venue soon. His solo stuff is very, very good and he's great live. I've seen him a few times, just him and his guitar, doing a mix of his own material, Squeeze songs (how many good Squeeze numbers were there!!) and various other standard covers. He's a real showman and gets everybody joining in. The Venue gig is him plus band so that should be a good one.
All quite sedate compared to the Nightclub/Tiffany gigs of the 70's/80's though!!!!
