Should we rename
"Portobello On Line" -General discussion " to
"Gossip and Tittle Tattle"
I know its sort of Lawrence's idea and he got flamed at the time,by me, but I'm thinking it may be a more fitting nom de plume. It certainly fits with the chat and it has a nice neighbourly feel. It also would better de-lineate the "Portobello Matters" forum. It could be a wee testament to Lawrence too but that's no reason not to do it, the boy does his best.
What do you think

Gossip & Tittle Tattle
This famous quote from our elected representative should be enshrined forever on internets as it is in our collective community consciousness.
Rename.
G&TT.

I appreciate the irony but I feel that it would devalue the general forum and play into the hands of our critics. As you know, I enjoy a bit of G&TT myself (ice and lemon) but there are also very serious topics that are discussed here that don't belong on Portobello Matters because they are not local issues.
I can't speak for BB and Marya, however I might be prepared to compromise with 'General discussion, gossip and tittle-tattle'

More than good enough for me. Porty - you've got Bob in a compromising position.

We obvioulsy have to wait until the outcome of the Poll. However, surely the secret of any succesful enterprise is determined by giving the customer base what it wants, within reason?

So if I agree, does that mean I'll be found in a compromising position with Bob?

No, with Porty.
Maybe it should be the Royal Bank Of Scotland General Discussion Forum!

BTW what is being proposed here Porty; that Portobello Online is renamed or that the description 'General discussion' is replaced?
Until this question is answered I think there is insufficient detail to this proposal for the community to give it serious consideration and that rumours that it will be 'rubber stamped' at the next Administrators meeting are simply the results of deliberate scaremongering.

Did you see my post over on 'Matters? He took it like a gent, and has also been very mature in not rising to any of my repeated Dr Who taunts.
I sure do admire him - his posts read like footnotes and I love nothing more than textbooks with good footnotes.

The clues are all in the question:
Porty wrote:Should we rename "Portobello On Line" -General discussion " to "Gossip and Tittle Tattle"
Portobello On Line is a silly title. By the time someone sees it they are already on line and no other Forums are so pre-fixed yet they are all on-line.. Gossip and Tittle Tattle gives a sense of gathering to discuss topics both frivolous and serious. General Discussion sounds like an order. IMHO

My (bad) idea which I was never going to share was to have general discussion, but when one of the threads turns into a bunfight it gets moved to a forum called the sandpit where you're free to kick sand in someone's eye but you know you've been naughty.
It would have an 18+ warning, require a moderator-decided opt-in to get access and have no profanity filter or rules.

I like " the gossip and tittla tattle" idea too, it sounds light hearted and friendly!!! Ideal for all the " light hearted and frindly" stuff!!!
Would it not be possible to have another forum for the serious topics which don't concern Portobello? Perhaps calling it " serious matters"??

( or something similar!)

Why be scared????

How about "It's Tittle Tattle Time with Larry Marshall"?
I propose Councillor L. Marshall as the only moderator on the board. If he decides a person has gone one gossip too far, then they get hit with his virtual tittling stick. There could be a Larry-Marshall-hitting-someone-with-his-tittling-stick emoticon.
I know, I know, it sounds rubbish, but it might just work.

Nice one, Poppy.
I don't really care what the forum is called but G&TT doesn't allow for the more serious threads, the music threads and let's not forget (as if) those threads that descend into seemingly interminable bouts of male puffing and posturing.
