Fort Kinnaird
Fort Kinnaird
Has anybody tried getting there recently on a bus?
I did last week and it was a complete nightmare! After about 40 years of a 12 becoming a 2 on the same route and vice versa, I discovered that it now goes to Asda and changes to.......a 5! The 32 only runs ever HALF AN HOUR! It now goes nowhere near the Fort (unless you count Niddrie Road and an uphill walk) so, to get there I got off at Asda and walked over a dirt track and to get back the quickest route was a 30 to Musselburgh and then a 26 to Portobello. Absolutely ridiculous! So much for trying to get people to use public transport! I will not be going shopping at the Fort (or B&Q or Wickes for that matter) without the car ever again.

It's nothing to do with walking or not walking. I walk for miles every week. I am not adverse to walking - in fact I LIKE walking. However, I don't see why I should have to walk. They should never have taken that 32 route off in the first place. I can't walk back from B&Q with tins of paint or rolls of wallpaper - I am a mere woman!Alex wrote:Have you tried walking there? It should be an easy walk from Portobello, but no...
Like you, it's the car or else I can't be bothered.
We don't have a car, and i've been considering walking to the Fort from time to time, but this thread does not encourage me! I haven't attempted it on the bus either because it seems like a nightmare journey. Instead I tend to go into town for anything I need now whereas when we did have a car we never went into town for shopping. I suppose that's a good thing really, as we don't want the city centre to be a ghost town, but it IS frustrating to not be able to go to B&Q sometimes. On the whole we support local shops even more now, including Woodwares, but it must be said sometimes to decorate your house with materials from there can require remortgaging! Still, i suppose with what we save on the car (when you add up diesel, tax, insurance, servicing etc, not to mention frayed tempers when people continually park across our driveway) we can afford the extra for shopping locally.
Anyway, for now, the Fort is off my shopping list!

That would be a laugh! We could all make a list and then once a month one of us could go and get it all! I love shopping in B&Q so it would be great fun spending everybody else's moneyscossie5 wrote:Maybe we could 'car pool' for B&Q? I am hazy on the detail, but worth a thought?
In defence of Woodwares they are just fantastic. However, I'm in there SO often buying paint that it's got a bit embarrassing! I'm sure they think I've got some sort of paint fetish!!
yeah - I sort of thought I could put up a message asking if anyone needed a lift on Saturday (for example) and then they could send a private message to arrange a meeting point and pick-up.
Then it all gets complicated.
You may have seen me and partner at the paint stand arguing the degree of difference between one shade to the next. Amazing the degree of agonising over .05% more red being added to the desired shade. We can spend 35 mins on just one Dulux strip card.

Nope, wouldn 't have paid any attention to arguing spouses in Woodwares - would be too busy arguing with my own!!scossie5 wrote:yeah - I sort of thought I could put up a message asking if anyone needed a lift on Saturday (for example) and then they could send a private message to arrange a meeting point and pick-up.
